[15-Day Nordic Solo Trip] Day 10: Stranded in Tromsø | The Failed Transfer to Abisko & Improvising on a Solo Trip

Trip Overview Today's original itinerary was to depart from Tromsø, Norway, take a long-distance bus to Narvik, and then transfer to a train to cross the border into Abisko, Sweden — a world-renowned spot for viewing the Northern Lights and a natural park. However, this transportation transfer, which I had been worried about all along, ultimately ran into trouble. Due to weather conditions, the main road to Narvik was temporarily closed, and the bus was unable to continue heading south, so in the end we chose to turn back to Tromsø. This is one of the charms of independent travel — besides broadening one's horizons, learning to think on your feet and find the best solution amid unexpected situations is also a rare and valuable experience. II. Trip Preparation 1. Transportation: Original itinerary planned Tromsø → Narvik → Abisko At 10:30 in the morning, take Bus No. 100 from Tromsø to Narvik (about a 4-hour ride); tickets can be booked using the app "Svipper". In the afternoon, take the SJ train to Abisko, Sweden (about 1.5 hours); tickets can be booked via the "Omio" app. Risk assessment: Winter transportation within the Arctic Circle is unstable — icy or closed roads are common — making this leg the hardest to predict in the whole trip. 2. Temporary accommodation: In the heart of the city center (Booking) Location: Near the Tromsø bus station, within a 10-minute walk. Room conditions: spacious with many rooms, but lacking complete kitchenware and appliances. Price reference: about NT$9,111 per night; if squeezed, it can fit 8–10 people, and the value for money is decent.

III. Tromsø → Abisko: A Sudden Turn of Events Departing from Tromsø Today, everyone managed the rare feat of leaving on time with all luggage packed. We set off from our accommodation toward the bus stop by the Tromsø waterfront. Although Google Maps estimated it would only take 17 minutes, between the melting snow, steep slopes, and dragging our luggage, it ended up taking more than 30 minutes. Tromsø is a hilly mountain town, and the steps were wet and slippery, so everyone had to work hard to make it through this stretch. After arriving at the bus station, we confirmed the bus was running as scheduled, bought our tickets without trouble, and settled in to wait for boarding.

Unexpected situation: the highway is closed, unable to reach Narvik. At 10:20 AM, all luggage was loaded onto the bus, and we specifically told the driver that we needed to transfer to a train. He kindly said he would remind us when to get off. An hour later, the driver suddenly made an announcement in English with a heavy tone, roughly saying: "The road ahead is closed due to an avalanche, this bus will not be able to reach Narvik!" Everyone was stunned at that moment. The driver said he couldn't decide for the passengers what to do, and could only offer two options: Get off early in some city and wait for the road to reopen to catch the next bus; Or go back to Tromsø the way we came, along with the bus.

Turning Back to Tromsø: A 9-Hour Bus Journey We discussed it for a long time. Although we had considered stopping midway to check for updates, given the unstable weather and how uncertain tomorrow still remained, we ultimately chose the safest option — turning back to Tromsø. This stretch of the ride was truly agonizing, because the bus still initially continued south along the original route toward the farthest stop, leaving us clinging to one last shred of hope: that maybe a miracle would happen along the way, and the road would open up. But it didn't.In the end, we took the same car back and arrived in Tromsø again just past 8 PM — after a 9.5-hour drive, we were right back where we started. We could only laugh bitterly and say, "Is this city just not letting us leave?On a whim, A-Juan also made a pilgrimage to the "northernmost McDonald's in the world," ordering sweet potato fries and fried chicken (reportedly quite tasty) — the only bit of fun on today's itinerary.

The weather remained bad at night, with heavy snow falling. We had completely given up hope of seeing the aurora, so we washed up and went to sleep, ready to take on the challenge again the next day! 4. Trip Summary & Other Nordic Travel Notes That day, although things went completely off the original plan, it truly reflected the reality of independent travel in the Nordics. In the polar regions during winter, the weather can change in an instant, and transportation disruptions are simply unavoidable. This experience was tough, but it also taught us to stay flexible and support each other. We didn't see the aurora, and we never made it to Abisko, but we came away with the most memorable story of a journey interrupted.
