Hai Van Pass: the world's number one majestic pass at the top of the mountain pass

Translated from Vietnamese
Hải Vân Quan — pháo đài đá + cổng gạch trên đỉnh đèo, view lên núi xanh

Hai Van Pass Gate is an ancient stone city gate atop Hai Van Pass, standing 496m above sea level. It was built in 1826 under King Minh Mang's reign and is ranked as the greatest gate under heaven — the most majestic gate in the realm. Its function: a military checkpoint controlling the land route between the North and Central regions of Vietnam.

Architecture: 2 main gates — Hai Van Quan facing Da Nang and Thien Ha De Nhat Hung Quan facing Hue. Stone walls 4-5m high, brick arched gates, with defensive fortifications on both sides. Recognized by UNESCO as a Vietnam-France Heritage site in 2017, restoration completed in 2024.

Get there by motorbike over Hai Van Pass (not through the tunnel) — it takes 45 minutes from the city center. At the summit there's a parking area, a spot selling coffee and souvenirs, and a 360° view of the mountains on both sides. Admission is free. Go in the morning between 8-10am to avoid the fog and get beautiful photos.
