Going to Ba Na Hills and Golden Bridge: how to choose the time to avoid the crowds

Translated from Vietnamese

Ba Na Hills is about 25–30 km west of downtown Da Nang, roughly a 45-minute to one-hour drive by car. The cable car ride to the summit is a long route with a huge elevation gain, and it's also the part that most people find the most worthwhile for the money.

Golden Bridge — the pedestrian bridge held up by two stone hands — is something almost everyone visits when they come up here. The only problem is it's always crowded. The bridge isn't long, but the number of people stopping to take photos is huge.

Timing tip: tour groups usually gather and arrive around 9–11 in the morning. If you take the very first cable car of the day and head straight up to the Golden Bridge first, you can get about an hour's head start ahead of that crowd. Early afternoon also tends to be quieter than late morning.

A few facts:

Bring a jacket. At elevations above 1,400 m, the temperature is typically about 10 degrees lower than in the city below, and it's often windy and misty. Fog is completely normal. Some days when you reach the top, it's all white — you can't see a thing — and no one's going to refund you for that. Check the forecast beforehand, and don't go right after a heavy rain. The ticket includes the cable car and most attractions in Fantasy Park, but food and beverages there are charged separately and are more expensive than downtown. Wear flat shoes. The road in the French village area is stone-paved, steep, and slippery when wet.

If you only have a day in Da Nang, Ba Na Hills will take up almost your entire day. If you're staying longer, this is a place worth dedicating a full session to rather than squeezing it in with other plans.
