Da Nang's rainy season: what tourism brochures don't show

Translated from Vietnamese

Promotional photos of Da Nang almost always show blue skies and blue sea. But this city has a distinct season that few brochures mention: from around September to December, it rains a lot, and this is also the storm season.

The rain here isn't the light, lingering drizzle you get in the northern regions. It's usually heavy downpours that last a few hours, enough to cause localized flooding on several routes, then it clears up and the sun comes out. The local people are so accustomed to it that they don't cancel their plans because of rain — they just change the time.

If you're visiting during this season, here's what you should know:

• Flexible booking. Ba Na Hills island tours and cable cars may stop suddenly due to safety notices. Choose a service that allows date changes. • Rough seas. From around October onwards, there are large waves and frequent offshore currents. Swim only at beaches with lifeguards and warning flags, or avoid swimming. • Hai Van Pass: thick fog and slippery road surfaces. During this season, you should take the metro or hire a car with a familiar driver—please don't ride a motorcycle yourself. A raincoat is more convenient than an umbrella. Heavy rain combined with strong winds makes an umbrella nearly useless. Poncho-style raincoats are sold all over, going for just a few tens of thousands.

When a real storm hits, the city has a clear procedure in place: advance notification several days ahead, hotels are required to fortify buildings and guide guests, and there are arrangements for organizing evacuations. All you need to do is follow the hotel's guidance and not go to the beach to watch the waves — every year someone gets into an accident doing exactly that.

In return, the rainy season offers things the dry season doesn't: much lower room rates, quieter attractions, and the city returning to its everyday rhythm of life. Days when it rains all day long are the perfect time to visit a museum, sit at a coffee shop, or hire a car with a driver to go to Hoi An without having to fight the crowds.

Car units with drivers on VietSpots are pinned below — during the rainy season, this is a safer choice than driving yourself.
