Hai Van Pass: three ways to cross the pass, and for each one there are people who choose wrong
Hai Van is a mountain pass separating Da Nang from Hue, stretching about 20 km with its highest point around 500 meters above sea level. The name means 'sea and clouds' — and that's genuinely an accurate description, not just flowery language.

There are three ways to go, each suited to a different kind of person.
Method 1 — Ride the motorcycle yourself. This is the method that's talked about the most online, and it's also the method that's chosen wrongly the most often. The road is beautiful, truly, but there are long slopes, sharp continuous curves, and trucks still run on it. You should only go if you're already experienced riding on mountain pass roads, your vehicle is still in good condition, and the weather is dry. Fog rolls down over the summit very quickly, and sometimes you can only see a few meters ahead.
Option 2 — Hai Van Tunnel. Cars pass through the tunnel in about 10 minutes instead of nearly an hour crossing the pass. Fast and safe, but you won't see any scenery at all. Motorbikes aren't allowed in the tunnel; there's a service that transports motorbikes through by specialized truck.
Option 3 — Private car with driver, taking the mountain pass road. You get the best of both: you still cross the pass, still stop at the summit to take photos and see the old bunker, without having to grip the steering wheel yourself. For those traveling from Da Nang to Hue on a one-way trip, this is typically the most sensible choice, because the driver can make additional stops at Lang Co fishing village and Lap An lagoon along the way.

A few facts:
Timing: early morning is when the sky is clearest. From midday onward, clouds often cover the summit, and during the rainy season (September–December), on many days when you reach the top you can only see white mist. • Jacket: the pass summit is windy, and the temperature difference compared to the foot of the pass is clearly noticeable. • At the top there are shops and stalls, but prices are higher than down in town — that's normal at a mountain pass stop. Please don't stop your vehicle in the middle of the curve just to take photos. There's a parking area at the top — just go a few hundred more meters and you'll get there.
