A Cultural Journey in Vienna: The Intersection of Coffee, Palaces, and Art

維也納中央咖啡館：文人雅士的聚會地 今早，為了沒訂到位的維也納中央咖啡館再次早起，8點開門，我們8:05抵達，前面已經有些客人排隊，不過還是順利入座。

這家擁有百年歷史的咖啡館，曾是許多19世紀歐洲文人雅士的聚會場所。像是心理學家佛洛伊德、蘇聯領導人列寧、建築師阿道夫路斯等人都曾是這裡的座上賓。門口還擺放著奧地利詩人Peter Altenberg的蠟像，他曾說：「我不在家，就在咖啡館，我不在咖啡館，就在前往咖啡館的路上。」

I ordered a Viennese breakfast. Many of the dishes at this cafe are labeled as organic and handmade; my meal included organic eggs, handmade croissants, and bread, paired with a cup of coffee. The coffee selection at the Viennese cafe is quite sophisticated—for instance, a Viennese coffee is an espresso with hot water and milk foam, whereas the cappuccino I ordered consists of two shots of espresso with milk foam.

There are three important historical figures in Schönbrunn Palace: Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria — diligent and caring for his people, known as the "first civil servant of Austria," he woke up around four in the morning, worked while eating breakfast at five, and served the country day and night. Empress Sophie (Franz's mother) — the true power holder within the court. Princess Sisi — a queen full of legendary charm, who rarely stayed in the palace for long because she grew tired of court life. Once inside the palace, you can clearly feel Emperor Franz's practical style — his rooms are simply decorated, without excessive luxury.

The banquet hall of Schönbrunn Palace still retains its furnishings from that era; it is said that this is where the Congress of Vienna was once held. The ivory-white walls reflect a special glow under candlelight (now replaced with light bulbs), making the room appear especially magnificent.

With our express pass, we visited 40 rooms (regular tickets only allow access to 28 rooms), and finally got to see the royal bed of that era, with an ornate crown hung high above it, showcasing royal power and status.

Augustine Church In the afternoon, we first came to the Augustinerkirche (Augustine Church). Although its exterior is understated, the interior is filled with a solemn atmosphere. It is one of the important wedding churches of the Habsburg royal family — the wedding of Franz Joseph and Princess Sisi was held here. The Gothic architecture and exquisite sculptures inside the church are truly breathtaking.

Hofburg Palace and the Sisi Museum After visiting the church, we continued on to the Hofburg Palace to see the Sisi Museum. Outside the museum entrance, a crowd of people in eccentric costumes had gathered — probably tour guides trying to drum up business.

The latter part of the exhibition introduces the interior of the Hofburg Palace: Princess Sisi's dressing room — she had hair so long it reached her waist, and each time she had it combed, it took two hours.

Home gym — she pays very close attention to health and body management.

Bathroom and Dressing Room — Sisi specially decorated the dressing room in a natural, nature-inspired style.

Rathausplatz Christmas Market and the Vienna State Opera: Where Art and Festivity Meet Before heading to the Vienna State Opera, we stopped by the Christmas Market in front of City Hall, where the lights were dazzling and the atmosphere was lively beyond words. Stalls of every kind sold festive treats and handcrafted goods, and the air was filled with the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts. As we strolled along, we admired the elaborately decorated Christmas trees and twinkling lights, soaking in Vienna's rich holiday spirit.

In the evening, we decided to try standing tickets for the Vienna State Opera, where standing tickets go on sale 80 minutes before the show starts. We arrived at 17:13, and there was already a line of 30 people, so we quickly notified our travel companions to hurry and join the queue.

The first act tells the story of a princess who falls into an enchanted sleep due to a curse on her coming-of-age day, and in the second act, the prince overcomes all sorts of hardships and wakes her with a kiss. I thought that was the end, but the audience didn't leave, and I realized there was a third act, telling of the prince and princess living happily ever after. Vienna has a rich cultural heritage, from its historic coffeehouses to its magnificent palaces and its opera house that feels like a temple of art—every corner is worth savoring slowly. A few tips: If you want to dive deep into royal history, we recommend buying the Sisi Ticket, which lets you enter Schönbrunn Palace quickly and skip the crowds. The Christmas markets are lively, but prices tend to be higher, so it's best to pick a few key stalls to try. Standing-room tickets at the Vienna State Opera are well worth experiencing, but we recommend lining up early and familiarizing yourself with how the standing-room system works beforehand.
