Da Nang

Six questions you should ask before finalizing the price for renting a private car in Da Nang

Translated from Vietnamese

Renting a car with a driver by the day is a popular way to travel to Ba Na, Hoi An, My Son, or Hue. Quoted prices between car rental companies can vary quite a bit, and most of the difference comes from things that aren't included in the initial quoted figure.

These six questions take just two minutes to ask, and they often save you more than haggling ever could.

Does the price include gas and toll fees? This is the item most often left out. The route to Hue through the Hai Van Tunnel has a separate tunnel fee.

2. How many hours are included, and how is overtime calculated? "Renting for a day" means something different everywhere — some places count it as 8 hours, others 10 hours. Also ask about the hourly rate for going over.

3. Is there a limit on kilometers? Most fixed routes have no limit, but for free-roaming day rentals, some places do set a cap.

4. Will the driver wait while I'm sightseeing? It sounds obvious, but that's not always the case — some cheap packages are just drop-off, with a set time to come back and pick you up.

5. How many seats does the car have, and is the trunk large enough for luggage? A group of 4 people with 4 large suitcases would be tight in a 5-seater car. Please specify the number of suitcases when inquiring about the price.

6. What foreign languages can the driver speak? If you need to communicate, please ask in advance; most drivers mainly speak Vietnamese.

Two small additions: lock in the whole agreement via message instead of just talking, and ask beforehand whether a deposit is needed. Tipping drivers in Vietnam is optional, not required.
