Why Coach Park Hang-seo Became a Celebrity in Vietnam ⚽

When you travel in Vietnam, you'll often see people waving flags in the streets on days when there's a soccer match, right?

You can also see people cheering enthusiastically while honking their motorbike horns.

There is one figure who cannot be left out of the history of Vietnamese football. That person is none other than Park Hang-seo, the coach from South Korea. 🇰🇷🤝🇻🇳

How did he go beyond Korea to become a national hero in Vietnam?

⚽ 1. 2018: The Year That Changed the History of Vietnamese Football

Coach Park Hang-seo took the helm of the Vietnam national team in 2017. And the following year, a historic moment arrived for Vietnamese football.

🏆 2018 AFC U-23 Asian Cup Runner-up

The Vietnam U-23 national team became the first Southeast Asian team to advance to the final of this tournament.

Our opponent in the final is Uzbekistan.

In a stadium blanketed by heavy snowfall, Vietnam lost 1-2 after a hard-fought extra-time battle and missed out on the championship.

But something greater than the result remained. It was the confidence that Vietnamese players, too, can compete on equal terms with Asia's strongest teams.

The Vietnamese people were thrilled by the players' fighting spirit, and Coach Park instantly became a figure who drew national attention.

🏆 2. Turning the Thrill of Second Place into Victory

Coach Park's success did not end there.

At the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup, held that same year, Vietnam defeated Malaysia to claim the title.

It was the first time in 10 years since 2008 that Vietnam became the champion of Southeast Asian football.

And in 2019, they won the gold medal in men's football at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games).

It was the first time in 60 years that Vietnam had won a gold medal in this event.

Vietnamese football was no longer a team that only talked about potential.

They have begun to prove their competitiveness through actual results.

❤️ 3. What people loved was not just the results

The reason Coach Park Hang-seo was so special cannot be explained by championship trophies alone.

He comforted the players and encouraged them not to hang their heads easily, even when they lost a game.

In particular, the way he comforted the players even after losing the final of the 2018 AFC U-23 Asian Cup left a deep impression on many people.

It goes to show that sincerity gets through, even across different languages and cultures.

To the Vietnamese people, Coach Park was not simply a football coach from a foreign country.

He was the one who instilled in his players the belief that they could succeed even on a bigger stage.

🇰🇷🇻🇳 4. A Korean coach becomes a hero in Vietnam

Coach Park Hang-seo's achievements went beyond the soccer field and also became an opportunity to strengthen the closeness between Korea and Vietnam.

The fact that when you meet a Korean in Vietnam, stories about coach Park Hang-seo can be warmly exchanged is also one of the special marks he has left behind.

Of course, the achievements of Vietnamese football are the result of both the players' hard work and the development of the football community.

Perhaps the greatest legacy he left behind was not his championship record, but the confidence that "we can do it too.
