It's especially useful for first-time visitors to Australia. Article Guide Itinerary Overview Best Travel Season 7 Essential Things to Know for Independent Travel in Australia Estimated Budget 10-Day Itinerary Plan and Highlights Further Reading Itinerary Overview 🗓 Trip Duration: 10 Days (Sydney + Melbourne) 🏙 Main Cities: Sydney, Melbourne 🚍 Transportation: Flights + Local Transit Cards (Opal / Myki) 🎯 Highlights: Blue Mountains, Great Ocean Road, Penguin Island, Hot Air Balloon, Oceania Cuisine and Nightlife Best Time to Travel Australia is located in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are opposite to Taiwan's: Summer (December-February): Great for beach activities, such as snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef or surfing at the Gold Coast. Autumn (March-May): The climate is pleasant, making it a great time for city sightseeing and winery experiences. Winter (June-August): The top choice for snow activities, but city tourism is colder. Spring (September-November): Flowers are in full bloom and the weather is comfortable, making it the best season for independent travel. 👉 Suggestion: If you want to avoid the crowds of peak season, choose autumn or spring for your trip. 7 Things You Must Know About Independent Travel in Australia Payment methods: Credit cards are widely accepted; only tour guide tips and zoo tickets purchased through the guide require cash payment. Some places even only accept credit card payments. Clothing preparation: On this trip we went to Sydney and Melbourne, and it was autumn at the time. Sydney's climate was stable, but Melbourne had bigger temperature swings. So I'd suggest preparing layered outfits, like a thin jacket and a thick jacket paired with short sleeves. For example, when we hit a cold snap in Melbourne that dropped to 11 degrees, this kind of combination was still enough to cope with it. Accommodation choice: This time we stayed near Central Station in Sydney, and although the room was a bit small, transportation was extremely convenient. As for Melbourne, we stayed at a hotel a 15-minute walk from Victoria Market. Since it wasn't within the Free Tram Zone, we had to walk 15 minutes each way to the city center every day — staying somewhere with convenient transport really does save time and effort! Transportation Tips: 📍 Sydney Transportation For getting around Sydney, you definitely need to get an Opal card — it works for trains, light rail, buses, and ferries. Based on our calculation, the budget is: Airport to Central Station (AUD 18.79, peak hours), and using the ferry, light rail, train, etc. within a single day (AUD 8.15 cap on weekends/holidays, AUD 16.30 cap on weekdays). The Opal card can be purchased at WHSmith in Sydney Airport. We recommend calculating your expected spending in advance before topping up. Latest information (2025): the Opal card's daily cap is AUD 16.30, the weekend cap is AUD 8.15, and the weekly cap is AUD 50 (airport surcharge not included). 📍 Melbourne Transportation Melbourne's Myki card costs 6 AUD to purchase, and the fare system isn't very user-friendly — tapping once within 2 hours costs 4.4 AUD, and tapping again after two hours costs 8.8 AUD. We recommend making good use of the Free Tram Zone — trams within the city center area are free, so you don't need to tap your card. Latest update (2025): Victoria plans to launch a cardless payment system in early 2026, allowing fares to be paid using a bank card, phone, or smartwatch, gradually replacing the Myki card. Local tours: Most of the local tours we joined this time were booked through KKday, but the quality of the Chinese-speaking guides was quite uneven. In contrast, local tours run by international agencies like Go West offered better service. If you're comfortable with English, we'd recommend choosing a tour operated by a foreign company — the overall experience will be much better! Tax Refund Guide: Australia's tax refund requirement is that you must spend a minimum of AUD 300 at a single ABN store to apply for a 10% tax refund. The overall process is as follows: The day before leaving Australia, fill out your tax refund information online at your hotel to get a QR Code. On the basement floor of the airport, find customs to inspect your goods and get your invoice stamped. After checking in your luggage, pass through customs and show your QR Code at the tax refund counter to process your refund. Other tips: Time difference: Sydney and Melbourne are 3 hours ahead of Taiwan (4 hours ahead during daylight saving time). Voltage and outlets: Australia's voltage is 230V, and outlets are Type I, so please bring your own adapter. Internet and communication: We recommend using an eSIM or a local SIM card (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone). Travel insurance: Medical costs in Australia are expensive, so it's recommended to purchase travel insurance just in case. Trip expenses Transportation: Round-trip flight, Sydney > Melbourne, city transportation AU$33,624 Accommodation: 3 nights in Sydney AU$3,922, 6 nights in Melbourne AU$6,250 Dining: AU$7,991 spent over 11 days, average AU$20–30 per meal eating out Attractions & local tours: AU$16,075 (details on local tour items in the article), hot air balloon AU$10,371 Total trip cost (including hot air balloon): AU$81,412 10-day itinerary planning and highlights 📍 Day 1-2: Transit through Singapore, arrive in Sydney and explore the city on foot 👉Sydney Independent Travel Day 1-2 | Flying from Vietnam to Sydney & City Walking Guide
