Nepali Cuisine Sharing: Authentic Flavors and Food Culture in an 11.5-Day Journey

11-Day Half-Independent Travel in Nepal: Restaurant Cuisine Sharing Nepali Cuisine Tibetan Cuisine Indian Cuisine Western Cuisine

Although the menus at Nepali restaurants have English, many are local specialty dishes. Here I'm introducing the dishes we've tried to share with everyone as a reference! Here I've roughly categorized the meals I've eaten into Nepali cuisine, Tibetan cuisine, Indian cuisine, and Western cuisine. This is just my personal classification and may not be completely accurate~ Nepali Cuisine 1.Thali Dhido This was our first meal in Nepal. We were at the restaurant Laxman Restaurant & Bar, and our tour guide Chen specifically recommended that I try this dish. Thali is Nepali food, usually consisting of a few side dishes, one staple, one meat dish, and a lentil soup. This is the Local chicken thali dhido that I ordered

The main staple in the middle is Dhido made from red quinoa — it doesn't have much flavor, and when you eat it you can taste the quinoa grains. After you start eating, the restaurant staff will also bring over piping hot ghee to pour on top, which adds more flavor. What's special is that when you order this dish, both the staple and the side dishes can be refilled~ It's a dish I often order while trekking (it's the most filling)

At that restaurant we ordered Local Chicken Thali Dhido, Veg. Dhido Thakali Thali, and Veg. Indian Thali — they're all basically Nepali rice dishes, just with different meats and staple foods.

Also, Nepali food dishes are called differently depending on the ethnic group that makes them. At the mountain lodge, Rice Dal (Bhat) also means Nepali rice meal. Also recommending this Nepali restaurant, it's delicious! Nepali Kitchen

2. Gurung Bread Nepalese bread, tastes similar to Shuangbaotai, appears frequently at breakfast, eaten together with honey or jam.

But when I was at the mountain hut/lodge, I also came across a savory option.

Tibetan Cuisine I feel like Tibetan cuisine also appears quite often in Nepali restaurants. Below is an introduction to what I tried at the YangLing restaurant, a Tibetan restaurant in Kathmandu. The menu of that restaurant

1. Momo, just imagine it's like dumplings, commonly eaten in Nepal too~

I ordered the Chicken Chili Momo at that restaurant, and it was super delicious! Highly recommend!

2. Thukpa, Tibetan Noodles

3. Chowmien 炒麵, directly Romanized (lol) 4. Thenthuk is also a Tibetan noodle dish, but the noodles are more like dough pieces (torn dough noodles) — we didn't get to try this one Indian cuisine Indian cuisine is also very common in Nepal. On our first night in Pokhara, we tried a vegetarian restaurant called Marwadi restaurant, and it was basically Indian food. However, since their definition of "vegetarian" just means no meat, they didn't skimp on spices at all, so vegetarians should be especially careful. Also, the taste was pretty average, not recommended Here's their menu

We ordered 1. Kadai Paneer: Kadai is a type of pot used by Indians. Paneer is a homemade rural cheese commonly made by Indian families, and the cheese is white in color.

2.Naan: A famous Indian bread, but the one this restaurant made is like the one in the photo above - super thin, quite disappointing! 3.Paneer Pasanda: Pasanda is also similar to curry, you can think of it as curry with cheese added

4. Roti Also an Indian handmade flatbread, the one on the right in the photo above 5. Curry When hiking, I either eat Nepali food or curry—options that are hard to go wrong with and will definitely fill you up

Finally, let me introduce the Western dishes offered at the mountain lodge I originally thought that Western dishes in Nepal probably wouldn't taste very good, but surprisingly, whether meat or vegetarian, the flavors were not bad at all! Macaroni (pasta)

Summary As tourism in Nepal continues to develop, the choices of mountain lodges have become quite a lot more, and it's not like what people shared before, where all you could eat was fried rice and fried noodles.
