Origin In 2024, I saw the aurora with my own eyes for the first time in Iceland, and that scene of green light swirling across the sky is deeply engraved in my memory.2024–2025 is predicted to be a massive breakout year for auroral activity, so greedy me decided to chase the northern lights one more time — this time crossing four Nordic countries plus the Arctic Circle in three of them, for an aurora adventure! For this trip, we spent over six months preparing, researching transportation connections and how to link up cities. Starting from Copenhagen, we took planes, trains, buses, and a cruise ship, crossing Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden along the way. We went through an avalanche road closure, a cancelled train, auroras seen from a cruise ship, and auroras seen from high in the sky. Looking back, this wasn't just a trip — it was truly an adventure that belonged to us. II. Route Map This trip has two groups: one departing directly from Vietnam to Copenhagen, and one transferring through the Netherlands from Taiwan. Travel Reflections and Summary This self-guided trip through the four Nordic countries was an extremely challenging journey. We did a lot of homework beforehand to figure out how to cross the Arctic Circle across three countries. We got to know the culture in the capitals of Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, and we admired the aurora within the Arctic Circle in Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Facing train cancellations, road closures, emergency transfers, and unexpected surprises (the aurora from the plane!), we learned to adapt on the fly and work as a team, and in the end we successfully completed this journey that was full of uncertainty yet indescribably beautiful. If I were to plan it again, I would leave an extra day for the Tromsø→Abisko leg, to allow more room for error, and also to be able to visit Narvik along the way. 7. Reminders and Precautions 📌 Clothing and Gear We recommend layered dressing: thermal wear + cotton mid-layer + windproof and waterproof down jacket Hiking boots or anti-slip snow boots are recommended; canvas shoes will get soaked Indoor heating is strong, so bring an outer layer that can be quickly put on and taken off 📌 Warmth & Frostbite Prevention Keeping feet warm is extremely important — wear wool socks + warm insoles (or sole warmers) Anti-freeze hand cream, lotion, and lip balm are must-haves If staying outdoors for a long time, pay special attention to frostbite on the nose tip and ears Phones freeze and crash easily — you can stick a hand warmer on the back of your phone 📌 Other Little Reminders Supermarkets in some areas close earlier at night, so check supermarket hours before your trip and prepare ingredients in advance if needed. Attractions such as City Hall and the shipwreck museum all require tickets purchased online or on-site, so it's recommended to arrange your itinerary early. The old town & snowy areas aren't suitable for dragging luggage, so it's recommended to choose accommodation that's easy to get in and out of.
