Origin In 2024, I saw the aurora with my own eyes for the first time in Iceland, and that scene of green light swirling across the sky is deeply etched in my memory.2024–2025 is predicted to be a major peak year for auroral activity, and being greedy for more, I decided to chase the aurora once again—this time crossing four Nordic countries and three Arctic Circles, for an aurora adventure! For this trip, we spent more than six months preparing, researching transportation connections and how to link up the cities. Starting from Copenhagen, we took planes, trains, buses, and a cruise ship, crossing Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden all the way, experiencing avalanche road closures, cancelled trains, aurora seen from a cruise ship, and aurora high in the sky. Looking back, this was not just a trip, but an adventure truly our own. II. Route Map This journey has two groups of travelers. One group is flying directly from Vietnam to Copenhagen, and the other group is traveling from Taiwan with a connection through the Netherlands. Travel Reflections and Summary Thoughts This Nordic four-country trip was an extremely challenging journey. We did a lot of preparation to find ways to cross the Arctic Circle of three countries. We experienced the culture of Denmark, Finland, and Sweden in their capital cities, and enjoyed the northern lights in the Arctic Circle of Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Faced with train cancellations, road closures, emergency transfers, and unexpected surprises (the aurora from the plane!), we learned to adapt on the fly and work together as a team, and in the end we successfully completed this journey full of uncertainty yet indescribably beautiful. If I were to plan it again, I would leave an extra day for the Tromsø→Abisko segment to give more room for error, and also fit in a visit to Narvik along the way. 7. Reminders and Precautions 📌 Clothing and Gear We recommend dressing in layers: thermal underwear + cotton mid-layer + windproof and waterproof down jacket Hiking shoes and non-slip snow boots are recommended—canvas shoes will get completely soaked. Indoor heating is strong, so we recommend bringing an outer layer that can be quickly put on and taken off. 📌 Staying Warm & Preventing Frostbite Keeping your feet warm is extremely important—wear wool socks plus insulated insoles (or foot warmers). Anti-freeze hand cream, body lotion, and lip balm are essential. If you spend extended time outdoors, pay special attention to frostbite risk on your nose tip and ears from the cold. Phones are prone to freezing and malfunctioning—you can stick a hand warmer on the back of your phone. 📌 Other Small Tips Some supermarkets in certain areas close early in the evenings. Check their operating hours before your trip and prepare ingredients in advance if needed. Attractions such as City Hall and the Shipwreck Museum require tickets purchased either online or on-site—it's best to arrange your itinerary ahead of time. Old towns and snowy areas aren't ideal for dragging luggage, so consider choosing accommodation that's convenient to access.
