According to legend, Le Loi, the founding emperor of Vietnam's Later Le Dynasty, once received a divine sword at this lake, and later returned it to a sacred turtle — which is how the lake got its name.The lake is home to the famous Turtle Tower and Ngoc Son Temple (which houses a preserved sacred turtle specimen). This is one of the liveliest areas in Hanoi, where you can see many Vietnamese people wearing ao dai and taking photos. Around the lake there are also well-known old-fashioned ice cream shops and cafes, making it a wonderful place for a leisurely stroll.

2️⃣ St. Joseph's Cathedral A French Gothic cathedral built in 1888, it is one of the most representative religious buildings in Hanoi. Located right next to Hoan Kiem Lake, it's recommended to visit together. There are many local street food vendors across from the cathedral where you can try Vietnamese sticky rice and sour plum drink (Nước Sấu), which are everyday flavors enjoyed by locals.

3️⃣ West Lake & Tran Quoc Pagoda The oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi, located on a small island in West Lake, surrounded by shimmering water and hills. It's best to visit in the early morning or at dusk, when the scenery is especially serene and enchanting.

4️⃣ Ba Dinh Square, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and One Pillar Pagoda Ba Dinh Square is an important political symbol of Vietnam, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is the final resting place of Vietnam's founding father. Mausoleum opening hours: Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM (entry stops after 10:15 AM). The mausoleum is often closed for maintenance during winter; we recommend checking for open dates in advance. The **One Pillar Pagoda (Lotus Platform)** nearby is Hanoi's most representative ancient pagoda, built during the Ly Dynasty. The pagoda is uniquely constructed on a single stone pillar with distinctive architecture.

5️⃣ Train Street A railway track cuts through an alley in a residential neighborhood, and when the train passes by, it comes extremely close to the surrounding buildings, making it a world-famous "Instagram photo spot." You can sit down at a café right beside the tracks and wait for the train to roar past, experiencing one of Hanoi's uniquely everyday surprises.

6️⃣ Water Puppet Show A traditional Vietnamese art form with a thousand-year history, performers use bamboo rods and strings to manipulate puppets on the water's surface. 7️⃣ 36 Old Streets (Old Quarter) The heart of Hanoi's ancient city, where streets were traditionally named after different industries, such as Silk Street and Silver Street. Today, the area has largely transformed into a tourist destination while still maintaining many traditional snack shops and handicraft stores. It's the perfect place to experience authentic Hanoi street culture.

8️⃣ Flower Street (Phan Đình Phùng) 🌸 The latest hotspot for influencer photos! The whole street is filled with colorful flower stalls and photo setups, perfect for a stroll, snapping photos to post online, and soaking in the local atmosphere.

9️⃣ Temple of Literature / Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám One of Hanoi's most iconic historical sites, built in 1070, it was Vietnam's earliest national academy and a place of worship for Confucius. The entire complex is divided into five courtyards, with architecture that feels antique and an atmosphere that is solemn and tranquil, making it the best place to understand Vietnamese Confucian culture. 🇻🇳 Vietnam National Day Ceremony and Military Parade (September 2025 Experience) This one was especially unforgettable. The streets of Hanoi were completely closed off and covered in flags, and the square was already packed with crowds by 3 a.m. We held on until 6:30 in the morning, watching the parade's opening on the big screen, followed by the grand military march and an aerial flying display. The atmosphere on site was intense and solemn, and it gave me an even deeper appreciation for the Vietnamese people's love and pride for their country.
