This is a practical preparation guide for Jakarta travel that I compiled after visiting in person in 2024 & 2025, including: E-visa application tutorial SIM card purchase recommendations and usage tips Tested transportation methods (Grab ride-hailing) Money exchange tips and common pitfalls Airport entry/exit tips Jakarta safety and culture reminders Whether this is your first time visiting Indonesia or you're planning a short trip as part of the New Southbound Policy, this article will help you get started with ease! ✈️ Jakarta e-Visa on Arrival (e-VOA) Application Guide Indonesia travelers can now apply for an electronic visa (e-VOA) online, which allows multiple entries and is valid for 60 days — perfect for short independent trips and business travelers. ✅ It's recommended to apply 5–7 days in advance to avoid delays 📍 Official website: molina.imigrasi.go.id 📝 Application documents: Passport file (valid for 6 months or more) Color headshot file (white background) Credit card payment 💡 Small reminder: You'll receive the visa PDF within about 1 hour after payment. Remember to print it out or save it on your phone. The barcode will be scanned when entering the country.

📱 Internet Access & SIM Card Recommendations This time I bought an Indonesian SIM card (Telkomsel) at AIR SIM, and I was able to activate and use it right away using the airport Wi-Fi — the signal is great in the city too. 🔹 Recommended choices: Indosat, Telkomsel, XL Axiata 🔹 Price range: NT$200–300 (depending on days and data allowance) 🔹 Hotspot sharing feature: Please confirm whether it's supported before purchasing If you haven't prepared it in advance, you can also buy one at the arrival hall of Jakarta airport, but it's recommended to buy it at an Alfamart / Indomaret convenience store in the city, as it's cheaper there. 🚖 Getting Around Jakarta Getting around the city relies on almost these two methods: 1. Booking a ride via the Grab / Gojek App Jakarta doesn't have a well-developed mass transit system, so the most recommended option is to download Grab (similar to Uber) — the pricing is transparent and it's safe. GrabCar: Suitable for groups of 2–4 people traveling together GrabBike: Cheap and fast, but you need to get used to the local density of motorbikes 💡 It's recommended to call a ride outside your hotel or at tourist attractions, rather than flagging one down on the street. 2. Taxis outside the hotel Besides Grab, there are also taxis outside hotels, or dedicated cars arranged by the hotel. The price may not always be the most economical, but it reduces language barriers and communication hassles, making it suitable for first-time travelers. 💰 Currency exchange tips and precautions The currency used in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), with an exchange rate of approximately: 1 TWD ≒ 500 IDR (2025) 🔹 Recommended Exchange Locations: Jakarta City (for example, inside Plaza Indonesia mall) Money exchange shops with clear signage, air conditioning, and visible receipts Airport exchange rates are usually worse 💡 Things to Note: Never exchange money at roadside private money changers—high chance of receiving counterfeit notes or being cheated! It's recommended to exchange for 50,000 and 100,000 denomination bills for convenient change-making and cleanliness 🛂 Jakarta Airport Immigration Reminder After arriving at the airport, use the e-visa passenger dedicated lane for much faster processing.If you don't have an e-visa, you'll need to queue up to apply for a visa on arrival, so it's recommended to arrange it in advance. After collecting your luggage, scan the QR code to make your declaration; it will be checked before you exit customs. 🧳 After exiting customs there are currency exchange counters and SIM card vendors, but the prices are on the higher side. You can also arrange for a hotel pickup, and staff will be waiting for you right as you exit customs.

🔒 Security and Culture Reminder Although Jakarta is Indonesia's capital, security is relatively safe, but you should still be aware of the following: Keep valuables separated or stored in hotel safe Bags recommended: use anti-theft bags or carry them in front Avoid being alone late at night in market areas 🎯 For clothing, it's recommended to be conservative and light, local people mostly wear long pants and loose tunics, and you should respect the Islamic cultural atmosphere. If you want to enter a mosque, you must comply with Islamic religious norms.
