[2025 Jakarta Self-Guided Travel Cheat Sheet] Pre-trip preparation × transportation × money exchange and internet guide, all in one!

Want to travel to Jakarta, Indonesia independently, but not sure how to arrange transportation, currency exchange, internet, and visas? This is a compilation of my Jakarta independent travel pre-trip preparation guide based on my on-the-ground visits in 2024 & 2025, including: e-visa application tutorial, SIM card purchase recommendations and usage experience, tested transportation methods (Grab ride-hailing), currency exchange tips and common pitfalls, airport entry/exit reminders, and Jakarta safety and cultural tips. Whether this is your first time visiting Indonesia or you're planning a short New Southbound trip, this article will help you get started with ease! ✈️ Jakarta Electronic Visa (e-VOA) Application Guide Indonesia-bound travelers can now apply for an electronic visa (e-VOA) online, which allows multiple entries and is valid for 60 days — perfect for short independent trips and business travelers. ✅ It's recommended to apply 5–7 days in advance to avoid delays 📍 Official website: molina.imigrasi.go.id 📝 Required documents: Passport file (valid for more than 6 months) Color headshot photo file (white background) Credit card payment 💡 Quick tip: You'll receive the visa PDF by email within about 1 hour after payment. Remember to print it out or save it on your phone, as the barcode will be scanned upon entry.

📱 Internet Access Methods & SIM Card Recommendations This time I bought an Indonesian SIM card (Telkomsel) at AIR SIM, and I was able to activate and use it directly using the airport WiFi. The signal was very good in the city. 🔹 Recommended choices: Indosat, Telkomsel, XL Axiata 🔹 Price range: NT$200–300 (depending on days and data) 🔹 Hotspot sharing feature: Please confirm whether it's supported before purchasing If you haven't prepared one in advance, you can also buy one at the arrival hall of Jakarta Airport, but it's recommended to buy it cheaper at an Alfamart / Indomaret convenience store in the city. 🚖 Getting Around Jakarta Getting around the city relies almost entirely on the following two methods: 1. Calling a ride with the Grab / Gojek app Jakarta doesn't have a well-developed mass transit system, so the most recommended option is to download Grab (similar to Uber) — the prices are transparent and it's safe. GrabCar: Suitable for groups of 2–4 people traveling together GrabBike: Cheap and fast, but you'll need to get used to the local motorbike traffic. 💡 Tip: It's better to hail a ride outside your hotel or at tourist spots rather than flagging one down on the street. 2. Taxis outside the hotel Besides Grab, there are also taxis outside hotels, or dedicated cars arranged by the hotel. The price isn't always the most economical, but it reduces language barriers and communication hassles, making it suitable for first-time travelers. 💰 Currency exchange tips and things to note Indonesia uses the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) as its currency, with an exchange rate of approximately: 1 NTD ≒ 500 IDR (2025) 🔹 Recommended places to exchange money: Jakarta City (e.g., inside Plaza Indonesia mall) Money changers with clearly posted rates, air conditioning, and proper receipts Airport exchange rates are usually worse 💡 Things to note: Never exchange money at roadside private money changers — there's a high chance of getting counterfeit bills or being short-changed through sleight of hand! It's recommended to exchange for 50,000 and 100,000 denomination notes, which makes getting change easier and cleaner 🛂 Jakarta Airport arrival/departure reminder After arriving at the airport, go through the dedicated e-visa passenger lane — it's much faster.If you don't have an e-visa, you'll need to queue up for a visa on arrival, so it's recommended to arrange it in advance. After collecting your luggage, scan the QR code to declare, as it will be checked before you exit customs. 🧳 After clearing customs, there are currency exchange counters and SIM card vendors, but the prices tend to be on the higher side. You can also arrange hotel airport pickup, so someone will be there to meet you right after you exit customs.

🔒 A Quick Reminder on Safety & Culture Although Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia, public safety is relatively good, but you should still be careful about the following: Keep your valuables separated or store them in the hotel safe For backpacks, it's recommended to use an anti-theft bag or carry it on your front Avoid being alone late at night around market areas 🎯 As for clothing, it's recommended to dress conservatively and comfortably — locals mostly wear long pants and modest tops, so please also be respectful of the local Islamic culture. If you plan to enter a mosque, you must comply with Islamic dress and behavior requirements.
