Translated from Traditional Chinese

South Island Road Trip × North Island Independent Travel × A Complete 15-Day Record A glacier helicopter flight, Milford Sound, Hobbiton, a campervan, the Southern Lights, and a rollover accident, after which the trip was still completed successfully. Introduction In June 2026, I completed my first-ever 15-day independent trip across New Zealand's South and North Islands. This journey began in Christchurch on the South Island, passing along the way through Arthur's Pass, Fox Glacier, Wanaka, Glenorchy, Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo, then fly to the North Island to explore Hobbiton and the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, and finally head home from Auckland. Over 15 days, we drove more than 1,700 km ourselves, spent 4 days living the campervan life, and stayed at Holiday Parks, B&Bs, and apartments; we took a helicopter up onto a glacier, toured the world-famous Milford Sound, and were lucky enough to capture our first-ever Southern Lights. We even had a rollover accident during the trip. We thought our plans would be cut short, but in the end we were still able to continue with the rest of our journey smoothly, and it left us with memories even deeper than the scenery. This article isn't a day-by-day travel diary. Instead, it condenses the entire trip into a single guide, covering New Zealand independent travel itinerary planning, self-driving tips, accommodation, campervans, costs, and things to keep in mind. I hope it helps those planning their first independent trip to New Zealand avoid some unnecessary detours.

On the South Island, the route runs from Christchurch to the West Coast, Wanaka, Glenorchy, and Te Anau, then returns to Christchurch via Lake Tekapo; on Day 12, you'll take a domestic flight to Auckland, and finally wrap up the North Island leg of the journey with Hobbiton, Waitomo, and Auckland city. The 8 Best Things to Do on This Independent New Zealand Trip 1. Fox Glacier Heli-Hike | Best Experience Without a doubt, this was the number one highlight of the entire trip. Taking a helicopter to land on a glacier and exploring ice caves, crevasses, and glacial streams under the guidance of a professional ice guide is an experience you should have at least once in your lifetime. Although the price isn't low, every member of the group agreed that it was absolutely worth it.

2. Milford Sound|Best Natural Scenery Many people think Milford Sound is just about taking a boat to enjoy the scenery, but the real highlight is the entire journey. About two hours from Te Anau, the route passes famous spots such as Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley, and Monkey Creek, before you finally cruise between towering canyon walls to see waterfalls and magnificent cliffs up close.

3. Southern Lights in Glenorchy|The Biggest Surprise I originally just went out to photograph the starry sky, but unexpectedly captured the first Southern Lights of my life. That moment was more unforgettable than any attraction in a travel guide.

4. Hobbiton | Best Movie Filming Location If you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, this is an absolute must-visit pilgrimage site. Even if you've never seen the films, you'll be completely captivated by the park's intricate set design and guided tour.

5. Waitomo & Te Anau Glowworm Caves | The Best Cave Experience The two glowworm caves have completely different styles. Waitomo: There are more glowworms, and the visual effect is even more stunning. Te Anau: The guided tour is more thorough, so you can learn more about glowworm ecology. If time allows, I'd recommend visiting both.

6. Lake Tekapo|Best Stargazing Stay Even if you don't get to see the aurora, I still highly recommend staying a night here. The dreamy sunset glow, starry skies, the Milky Way, and the Church of the Good Shepherd are more than enough to make this one of the most worthwhile towns to stop in on the South Island.

7. Glenorchy|Best Hidden-Gem Town The morning mist over the lake, the snow-capped mountains, the forests, and the peaceful small-town atmosphere make this the most dreamlike place of the entire journey.

8. Campervan Travel|The Best Way to Travel Spending four nights in a campervan was my first time, and it was a really fun experience. Finding campsites on your own, cooking your own meals, and waking up to different scenery every day — this is one of the most charming ways to explore New Zealand.

3. The Biggest Twist of the Trip: A Rollover Accident On Day 5, on the way to Wanaka, our car rolled over. Fortunately, everyone was safe and unharmed. What impressed me even more was how warm and helpful New Zealanders were. Passersby helped right away, the police handled everything quickly, and paramedics carefully checked us for injuries. In the end, with an extra private charter arranged, it took us just one afternoon to get back on our original itinerary. This accident didn't ruin our trip; instead, it let me experience New Zealand from a different perspective. New Zealand Car Rental and Self-Driving Experience Is driving a right-hand-drive car for the first time really that hard? We're normally used to left-hand-drive cars, so suddenly switching to a right-hand-drive car gives you a different view from the driver's seat. On top of that, the vehicles we rented were a 10-seater and a campervan, which made driving considerably more challenging. Just a reminder to slow down when needed, and don't pack your itinerary too tightly when planning. For example, if Google Maps estimates 2.5 hours, it's best to allow 3 hours. Is it easy to refuel? There are fewer gas stations along the western stretch, so we planned ahead of time where we should stop to refuel.

Is parking easy? The guesthouses and campsites where you stay for a few days won't have any parking problems. When parking in the city, however, be aware that parking spaces may have time limits, so be careful to avoid getting a fine.

Driving Tips The most basic thing is to understand the local traffic signals, especially roundabouts. We watched quite a few videos to study this before we set off. When driving in the mountainous areas in the west, you'll come across a lot of animal carcasses. Be careful not to cause an accident by swerving suddenly like we did. It's best to slow down, and if it really can't be avoided, you'll just have to steel yourself and drive over them. Our accident happened just before entering a bridge. Later, we observed how the locals drive and noticed that even on main roads, they almost always slow down to below 20 km/hr. Since it's hard to judge the distance to the side in a right-hand-drive car, we suggest keeping close to the center line.

Would I recommend getting full coverage insurance? Full coverage is definitely recommended, because if a flying stone cracks your windshield, or you misjudge a distance and get into a minor scrape, repairs abroad can be very expensive, and that's when you'll need insurance. However, after our rollover accident this time, the rental company invoked an exclusion clause and refused to cover it. (The insurance contract stated that rollovers are not covered.) 6. Is it worth renting a campervan in New Zealand? This time, we wanted to experience a campervan while still keeping up the quality of our trip, so we went with the most expensive option: we rented a 10-seater for the first leg, then switched to a campervan once we reached Queenstown. The downside is obvious: we paid two extra one-way (pick up at A, drop off at B) fees plus rental service fees. The upside, though, is that we got to experience a different way of traveling. Also, after our accident, this helped limit our losses (we only lost three days with the vehicle, though of course that doesn't really need to be factored in). Campervan vs. Rental Car + B&B 1. Comfort: Staying at a B&B is definitely more comfortable We were six people squeezed into a six-person camper van. Although space wasn't an issue, compared with guesthouses, where we would specifically choose single beds or king-size double beds, there was still a difference in comfort. 2. Convenience: Tie To avoid driving at night, we didn't drive out to chase the northern lights, so the camper van ended up serving as both our transportation and our accommodation at night, and we never really took advantage of the convenience of sleeping wherever we happened to be exploring. 3. Price: We rented a 10-seat Toyota Hiace Auto for 6 days for NT$31,800, an average of NT$5,300 per day, plus accommodation of about NT$1,850 per person per night. Meanwhile, the River - 6 Berth campervan cost NT$50,465 for 6 days, an average of NT$8,411 per day, plus campsite fees of NT$500 per person per night. **Conclusion:** I think a couple could consider a camper van, but for four or more people, renting a car and staying at guesthouses would probably be more comfortable and better value.

[New Zealand Independent Travel] Day 14-15 | Last day in Auckland! Mount Eden, shopping at Westfield Newmarket, and flying back to Taiwan 9. If I went again, how would I plan it? Based on this experience, what itinerary would I recommend? 1. The highlights of the North Island are Hobbiton and the Waitomo Glowworm Caves If you're not a big movie fan, I'd suggest focusing your trip on the South Island. 2. Glacier hiking can easily be fitted in along the way The highest-rated glacier hike is at Mount Cook, so I'd suggest doing the route in the regular direction. At the time, we considered going in reverse so the harder-to-drive western sections would come first. 3. Mornings in Glenorchy are absolutely gorgeous I definitely recommend booking a stay there. 4. Tekapo is most famous for its starry skies So I also definitely recommend staying overnight there. 5. For Milford Sound, consider joining a day tour It will save you the fatigue of driving yourself. 6. You don't necessarily need to book a campervan Even though hearing about a trip to New Zealand often brings it straight to mind. 10. New Zealand Independent Travel FAQ Q: Are 15 days enough to enjoy the trip? **A:** Yes, but I recommend planning for the South Island only. Q: Is winter a good time for a first visit? **A:** This time we chose June so we could see the aurora, but I found that the Aurora Australis really comes down to luck, so you shouldn't build your whole itinerary around it. Q: Do I really need to rent a campervan? **A:** I stand by my earlier point: I don't think you necessarily need to rent one. Q: Milford Sound: would you recommend driving yourself or taking the bus? **A:** I'd recommend joining a day tour. Personally, I felt the timing was just right, and it saves you the hassle of driving yourself. Q: Fox Glacier: is it worth it? **A:** Absolutely worth it! It's one of the most unforgettable memories of this trip. Q: Waitomo and Te Anau: which one should I choose? **A:** Honestly, each one has its own highlights. My personal rule of thumb is this: if you're only visiting the South Island, then Te Anau is the obvious choice, but if you're visiting both the North and South Islands, I'd actually recommend Waitomo. Q: Is the North Island worth visiting? **A:** Our thinking when we planned the trip was that the older members of our group might only get this one chance to visit New Zealand, so we greedily packed both the North and South Islands into the itinerary. If you set that aside and just plan the trip on its own merits, sticking to the South Island would be better. Q: Is Hobbiton worth the ticket price? **A:** I'm not really a Lord of the Rings fan, but I think it was well worth it. The whole set was arranged with great care, and getting the chance to walk into a movie set was a special experience too. Conclusion New Zealand isn't the kind of trip that's thrilling every single day. Its charm comes from the snowy mountains, roads, lakes, and starry skies along the way, as well as the stories that were never planned but happened unexpectedly. In fifteen days, we encountered glaciers, fjords, the Milky Way, and the Aurora Australis, and we also went through a rollover accident; fortunately, everyone was safe and sound, and the journey didn't come to an end because of it. Looking back, what I truly miss isn't just any single attraction, but driving every day between snowy mountains and lakes, watching the scenery constantly change, and welcoming each day's unknown surprises. If you're planning your first self-guided trip to New Zealand, I hope this guide can be your starting point; and my 15 travelogue, on the other hand, hopes to accompany you, step by step, through this wonderful journey.
