Okinawa 7 Days 6 Nights Self-Guided Trip｜Self-Driving Itinerary Planning × Snorkeling Experience × Must-Visit Attractions Review

Preface This 7-day, 6-night self-drive trip to Okinawa was booked as a "late departure, early return" budget airline combo, so the actual time we had to play was only 5 days — but we still managed to cover the best of northern, central, and southern Okinawa. From snorkeling and diving at the Blue Cave, to the World Cultural Heritage site Shuri Castle, Cape Manzamo, Kouri Bridge, and the Churaumi Aquarium, plus shopping on Kokusai Street and all kinds of delicious food — we didn't miss a thing. Honestly, driving on the right side for the first time made me a little nervous, and on top of that we got the car stuck at one point and the navigation kept acting up, which added a lot of "story-worthy" moments to the whole trip 😂.But it's precisely because of these little episodes that the trip becomes more memorable. In this post, I'll share the itinerary, accommodation experience, and my personal thoughts, hoping to help you—if you're planning an Okinawa independent trip—avoid stepping on some pitfalls. Itinerary Overview 🗓 7 Days 6 Nights (5 days of actual sightseeing) 🚗 Self-driving + a local one-day tour 🏨 Accommodation: traditional guesthouses, hotels, and apartment-style lodgings 📍 Itinerary Highlights: Futenma Shrine Limestone Cave Zanpa Cape Lighthouse Blue Cave snorkeling & scuba diving Seifa Utaki & Gyokusendo Cave Shuri Castle & Kokusai Street Shopping Northern Okinawa Day Tour (Cape Manzamo, Kouri Bridge, Churaumi Aquarium, American Village) Naminoue Beach & Local Market Food Daily Itinerary Log Day 1｜Taoyuan → Naha (Night Flight) We took a budget airline to Naha, but ended up waiting helplessly for 1.5 hours at Taoyuan Airport due to air traffic control, and only got a 200 NTD delay meal voucher as a small consolation. We arrived in Naha at 11 pm, but thankfully the OTS shuttle bus was still waiting for us. Driving on the right side of the car for the first time was really thrilling — I kept mixing up the wipers and the turn signals, and at one point I even nearly drifted into the oncoming lane 😅. It was a struggle just to get near the hotel, and then the GPS started "looping in circles" again — in the end, only Google Maps managed to guide me there successfully. The hotel's parking spaces were all full, so I had to go to a self-service parking lot, and that's when I learned about Japan's "wheel-lock" parking design — the car is only released after you pay the next day. It was the first time I'd encountered this, and I found it really novel.

Day 2｜Futenmagu Shrine → Cape Zanpa → Blue Cave Snorkeling → Bitter Melon Villa Futenmagu Shrine: A compact stalactite cave paired with a solemn shrine — it feels like a hidden world of its own.

Cape Zanpa: The white lighthouse faces the sea, and although it's a simple view, it's incredibly soothing. There are also Okinawan shisa (guardian lion-dogs) here.

Blue Cave snorkeling + scuba diving: my first ever dive in life! Swimming among schools of fish in crystal-clear blue water, with an instructor even helping take photos — the pictures are clearer than my memory of the moment itself.

Dinner: Jam Teppanyaki — watch the chef perform right in front of you while you eat, so you'll never be bored.

Accommodation at Bitter Melon Manor: Getting from the pier to Bitter Melon Manor requires taking the expressway—another achievement unlocked! You can experience staying in a traditional Japanese-style house at Bitter Melon Manor, but the soundproofing is really poor. We happened to encounter some very rowdy young Japanese tourists and even had to go knock on their door to communicate.

Day 3｜Seifa Utaki → Gyokusendo → Tsudo Ramen So many surprises today! Seifa Utaki: This is the most sacred prayer site in Okinawa, and you can really feel a strong sense of holiness there. It's not just a tourist spot — locals genuinely come here to pray. After visiting Seifa Utaki, you can head over to nearby Chinen Bay to take a look.

Café curacuma coffee shop and a little car-stuck mishap: We planned to have lunch at café curacuma, a restaurant said to have an unbeatable sea view. But on the way there, an accident happened — we took a wrong turn and had to reverse out, and without noticing, the car fell right into the gap between the residential area and the road. Luckily, OTS's Chinese-speaking customer service was incredibly helpful and helped us contact roadside assistance to resolve it. Although it gave us a little scare, it's also a special memory from the trip.

King's Village and Gyokusendo Cave: King's Village offers many Okinawan folk craft experiences, but due to time constraints we only got to watch the taiko drum show there — still, it already felt worth the ticket price. As for the whole cave, compared to Futenma Shrine's limestone cave, this one is far more spectacular! You can even see the stalactites "in the process of forming," which was truly eye-opening.

Dinner Tsuu-Tang Ramen: The pickled bean sprouts really made it! The broth was so rich that one sip was a revelation, instantly claiming the top ramen spot of this whole trip.

Accommodation: Estinate Hotel — bursting with design flair, the lobby even feels like a café, making you want to snap photo after photo.

When returning the car, I filled out an accident report at the OTS office. Surprisingly, this roadside assistance was completely free of charge (probably because I had purchased the peace-of-mind insurance when renting the car). Day 4｜Shuri Castle → Yanshokudo → Danbo Ramen Shuri Castle: We took the cute little monorail to Shuri Castle, stepping into the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The architecture blends Chinese and Japanese styles, and it was really full of character to look at.

Lunch at Yan Shitang: a Taiwanese-run seafood restaurant, with fair prices and fresh food.

Naha's Museums & Art Museums: The museum I planned to visit in the afternoon was closed for renovation, so there was nothing to see, and I had no choice but to head back to the hotel early to rest.

Dinner ramen showdown: Nanoku vs. Tsutadō. Conclusion → Tsutadō wins on the original-flavor broth, while Nanoku shines more in the spicy version.

Day 5｜Northern Okinawa Day Trip (Cape Manzamo, Kouri Bridge, Churaumi Aquarium, American Village) Today was the highlight of the northern area, but the weather wasn't great. Cape Manzamo (stayed 30min): Watching the Elephant Trunk Rock standing against the wind by the sea, it was still as majestic as ever.

Kouri Bridge (30-minute stop): The sky was gray, and the legendary gradient blue sea didn't appear, which was a bit disappointing.

Churaumi Aquarium (150 min stop): One of the highlights. When we arrived at the aquarium, it was pouring heavy rain, which meant the dolphin show originally on the itinerary was cancelled. Luckily, the rest of the activities were all indoors and unaffected by the heavy rain. The whale sharks and manta rays in the Kuroshio Sea tank were so stunning that we couldn't take our eyes off them.

Pineapple Park (30 min stop): A tourist farm themed around pineapples. American Village: Has a small American town vibe, but since time was limited, we only visited a few shops.

Accommodation: Seaside Hotel: Although this hotel looks straight out onto the green space of Naminoue Shrine Beach, and the location is very good, we ran into rainy weather and weren't able to enjoy the beach atmosphere.

Day 6 | Naminoue Beach → Kokusai Dori Shopping → Return to Tsudo Naminoue Beach: The closest beach to downtown Naha. Unfortunately, with the rain and its small size, the overall experience was just so-so.

Wan Yuan Sweet Soup Shop: A famous breakfast place (they also serve lunch). During meal times, the shop is always full of Japanese customers.

International shopping spree: souvenirs, awamori, and drugstore cosmetics — bought so much my arms went soft. Revisiting Tsuido Ramen: this time there was no need to line up at all, and the broth was still perfect. Apartment hotel next to the airport: this apartment hotel was the most impressive place I stayed during this Okinawa trip — a soft bed, a sofa chair, all kinds of appliances, and a bathtub. My younger brother said: "I'd love to rent this for a month and just live here!

Night at Onoyama Park: An unexpected windfall of Pokémon while strolling — a surprise gamers will understand! Day 7｜Naha → Taoyuan (early morning flight) Got up early and dragged our luggage to Naha Airport's international terminal — based on what we asked yesterday, it's a 15-minute walk from the hotel to the airport. Here I'd suggest asking the hotel staff to help book a taxi; Okinawa taxis aren't too expensive, and the 25-minute ride reportedly costs about 1000 yen. Also a reminder, PEACH's airport gate is an LCC one—thankfully a kind ground staff member reminded us at the time, otherwise we would have foolishly waited for the plane at the international line… To reach the LCC gate you need to take a shuttle bus, boarding at bus stop No. 4 outside the domestic airport, and you must catch the bus at least 70 minutes before departure (search "Okinawa LCC" for details). Trip reflections The biggest highlight of this Okinawa self-drive trip is "self-driving + island activities." Even though we ran into a stuck car and bad weather, we still came home with a trunk full of memories: Snorkeling & Scuba Diving: Interacting up close with schools of fish was the most unforgettable moment of the whole trip. Okinawa Cuisine: Ramen showdowns and cozy seafood joints made me look forward to every single meal, every day. Self-Driving Experience: There were a few small hair-raising moments, but they gave the trip more of a story to tell. In summary, Okinawa is a great fit for a 5–7 day itinerary. You can enjoy the laid-back island vibe while also diving deep into the culture and history. If I get the chance to visit again, I'll head straight for the north or the outer islands, slow down properly, and enjoy Okinawa's scenery in its purest form.
