Preface This 7-day, 6-night self-drive trip to Okinawa was a "late departure, early return" combo on a budget airline, so we actually only had 5 days to play with — but we still managed to cover the highlights of northern, central, and southern Okinawa. From snorkeling and diving at the Blue Cave, to the UNESCO World Heritage site Shuri Castle, Cape Manzamo, Kouri Bridge, and the Churaumi Aquarium, plus shopping and all kinds of food on Kokusai Street — we didn't miss a thing. Honestly, driving on the right-hand side for the first time made me a little nervous, and on top of that we got the car stuck at one point and the GPS acted up, which gave the whole trip an extra dose of "story-worthy" moments 😂.But it's precisely these little episodes that make a trip more memorable. In this post, I'll share my itinerary, accommodation experience, and personal thoughts, hoping to help you—if you're planning an independent trip to Okinawa—avoid a few pitfalls. Itinerary Overview 🗓 7 days, 6 nights (5 actual days of touring) 🚗 Self-drive + local day tour 🏨 Accommodation: traditional guesthouse, hotel, apartment-style lodging 📍 Itinerary highlights: Futenma Shrine Limestone Cave Cape Zanpa Lighthouse Blue Cave snorkeling & scuba diving Seifa Utaki & Gyokusendo Cave Shuri Castle & Kokusai Street Shopping Northern Okinawa Day Trip (Manzamo, Kouri Bridge, Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, American Village) Naminouegu Beach & Local Market Cuisine Daily Itinerary Record Day 1 | Taoyuan → Naha (Evening Flight) We took a budget airline flight to Naha, but ended up waiting 1.5 hours at Taoyuan Airport due to air traffic control issues. We only received a 200 NT meal voucher as a small consolation. By the time we arrived in Naha, it was already 11 PM. Fortunately, the OTS shuttle bus was still waiting for us. Driving on the right side of the car (left-hand traffic) for the first time was truly thrilling — I kept hitting the wipers instead of the turn signal, and at one point I even nearly drove into the oncoming lane 😅. After finally making it near the hotel, the GPS started going in circles again, and in the end I only managed to find it with Google Maps. The hotel's parking spots were all full, so I had to go to a self-service parking lot, and that's when I learned about Japan's "wheel-lock" parking system — the car only gets released after you pay the next day. Since it was my first time encountering this, I found it really fascinating.

Day 2|Futenma Shrine → Cape Zanpa → Blue Cave Snorkeling → Bitter Melon Villa Futenma Shrine: A small stalactite cave paired with a solemn shrine gives it a hidden, otherworldly charm.

Zanpa Cape: The white lighthouse faces the sea, and although it's a simple view, it's incredibly soothing. There are also Okinawan shisa (lion-dog guardian statues) here.

Blue Cave Snorkeling & Diving: My first diving experience ever! Swimming with fish in the crystal-clear blue waters, with the instructor capturing photos – the images are even clearer than my own memories of the moment.

Dinner Jam Teppanyaki: watch the chef perform while you eat — you'll never be bored.

Accommodation - Kuguazhuang: Getting from the pier to Kuguazhuang requires taking the highway, which is another achievement unlocked. At Kuguazhuang you can experience staying in a traditional Japanese-style house, but the soundproofing is really poor - we happened to run into some very rowdy young Japanese tourists, and even had to knock on their door to talk it out.

Day 3|Seifa Utaki → Gyokusendo Cave → Tsudo Ramen So many surprises today! Seifa Utaki: This is the highest sacred site of prayer in Okinawa, and you can really feel the deep sense of the sacred there — it's not just a tourist spot, there were genuinely local people coming to pray. After finishing at Seifa Utaki, you can head over to nearby Chinen Bay to take a look.

A little café curacuma & car-stuck episode: We planned lunch at café curacuma, a restaurant said to have unbeatable ocean views. On the way there, we ran into an accident—we took a wrong turn and needed to back the car out, and before we knew it, we'd dropped into the gap between a residential area and the road. Thankfully, OTS's Chinese-speaking customer service was incredibly helpful and got roadside assistance to come sort it out for us. It gave us a bit of a scare, but it's also become a special memory from the trip.

Kingdom Village and Gyokusendo Cave: Kingdom Village offers many Okinawan folk craft experiences, but due to time constraints we only got to watch the taiko drum show — even so, it already felt worth the ticket price. As for the full cave, compared to Futenma Shrine's stalactite cave, this one is far more spectacular! You can even see the stalactites "in the process of forming," which was truly eye-opening.

Dinner at Tongtang Ramen: The pickled bean sprouts are an absolute game-changer! The broth is so rich and intense that one sip is absolutely amazing—instantly claiming the title of best ramen of this trip.

Accommodation at Estinate Hotel: Bursting with design flair — the lobby even feels like a café, making you want to snap photo after photo.

When returning the car, I filled out an accident report form at the OTS office. Surprisingly, this roadside assistance was completely free of charge (probably because I had purchased the peace-of-mind insurance when renting the car). Day 4|Shuri Castle → Yanshoku Shokudo → Danbo Ramen Shuri Castle: We took the cute little monorail to Shuri Castle and stepped into the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom. The architecture blends Chinese and Japanese features, and it was really full of character.

Lunch Yan Shi Tang: A seafood restaurant run by Taiwanese owners, with reasonable prices and fresh ingredients.

Naha's Museum & Art Museum: The museum I had planned to visit in the afternoon was closed for renovation, so there was nothing to see, and I had no choice but to head back to the hotel early to rest.

Dinner ramen showdown: Danbo vs. Tsuta— sorry, Tondo(Tsuten). Wait, let me redo this properly: Dinner ramen showdown: Danbo vs. Tsuten. The verdict → for the original-flavor broth, Tsuten wins, but for the spicy version, Danbo is even better.

Day 5 | Northern Okinawa Day Trip (Cape Manzamo, Kouri Bridge, Churaumi Aquarium, American Village) Today was the highlight of the northern part of the trip, but the weather wasn't great. Cape Manzamo (30-minute stop): Watching the Elephant Trunk Rock standing firm against the sea wind, it was still an impressive sight.

Gu Uli Bridge (30-minute stop): The sky was grey and grey, and the legendary gradient blue sea didn't appear — a bit of a letdown.

The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (150-minute stop): one of the trip's highlights. When we arrived at the aquarium, it was pouring rain, so the dolphin show originally scheduled had to be cancelled — but fortunately, the rest of the itinerary was all indoors and unaffected by the heavy rain. The whale sharks and manta rays in the Kuroshio Sea tank were so breathtaking that we couldn't take our eyes off them.

Pineapple Park (30-minute stop): A sightseeing farm with pineapples as the main theme. American Village: A small American-style town atmosphere, but we only visited a few shops due to limited time.

Accommodation, Seaside Hotel: Although the view from this hotel looks out directly onto the green space of Naminoue Shrine Beach, and the location is really great, we happened to run into rainy weather, so we weren't able to enjoy the beach atmosphere.

Day 6|Waga Shrine Beach → Kokusai-dori Shopping → Return to Tsuji-do

Ganwei Chu Wanwan: A famous breakfast shop (they also serve lunch). During mealtimes, the shop is full of Japanese customers.

Naha Kokusai-dori shopping spree: I bought so many souvenirs, awamori, and drugstore goodies my arms could barely carry them all. Revisiting Tondo Ramen: this time there was no need to queue at all, and the broth was just as perfect as before. Apartment-style hotel near the airport: this apartment-style hotel was by far the most impressive place we stayed during our trip to Okinawa — a soft bed, a sofa chair, all kinds of appliances, and a bathtub. My younger brother even said, "I'd love to rent a place like this and just live here for a whole month!

Night at Ounoyama Park: an unexpected surprise on our walk — a Pokémon haul that gamers will totally get! Day 7 | Naha → Taoyuan (early morning flight) We got up early and dragged our luggage to Naha International Line. Based on what we asked yesterday, it's a 15-minute walk from the hotel to the airport. Our suggestion is to have the hotel staff help book a taxi for you — taxis in Okinawa aren't too expensive, and the 25-minute ride reportedly costs around 1,000 yen. Also, a reminder: PEACH's airport terminal is the LCC one — good thing a kind ground staff member reminded us at the time, otherwise we would have foolishly waited at the international terminal for our flight… To reach the LCC terminal you need to take a shuttle bus, boarding at bus stop No. 4 outside the domestic terminal. You must catch the bus at the latest 70 minutes before departure (for details, you can search "Okinawa LCC"). Trip takeaways The biggest highlight of this Okinawa independent trip was "self-driving + island activities." Even though we got the car stuck and ran into bad weather, we still came home with a trunk full of memories: Snorkeling & Scuba Diving: Swimming face-to-face with schools of fish was the most unforgettable moment of the entire trip. Okinawa Cuisine: From ramen battles between east and west styles to charming seafood eateries, every meal became something to look forward to each day. Self-Driving Experience: While there were occasional thrills and surprises, they only added more character and story to the journey. In summary, Okinawa is perfectly suited for a 5–7 day itinerary. You can enjoy the relaxed island atmosphere while also diving deep into its rich culture and history. If I ever get the chance to return, I'd focus on exploring the northern regions or remote islands, take things slow, and immerse myself in Okinawa's more authentic beauty.
