Da Nang Salty Coffee: An Emerging Specialty Replacing Egg Coffee

Translated from Vietnamese
Ly cà phê Việt Nam đặc sản — foam cream trên nền đen của espresso

Salt coffee originated in Hue and has become a Da Nang specialty only in the past 5 years or so. The recipe is simple: strong black phin coffee topped with a whipped salted cream foam layer (condensed milk + fresh cream + a pinch of sea salt). The taste: bitter, sweet, and salty all at once.

Salt in the recipe doesn't make the coffee salty — it amplifies the sweetness of the milk and reduces the bitterness of the coffee. It sounds strange, but when you drink it, the salt disappears completely, leaving only a sense of balance. Foreign guests who try it for the first time usually remember it for weeks.

Priced at 30,000–50,000 VND/cup. Many cafés that roast and brew coffee on-site (Rachel Coffee, 43 Factory, Cộng Cà Phê) make salt coffee of higher quality than the chains. It tastes best in the morning between 8-10 with Bà Lan bread brought along.

☕ Price: 30k-50k · Recommended: iced salt coffee · Comes with: croissant · No added sugar (already has condensed milk)
