Da Nang

Are there only three hours in Hoi An? If you follow this order, you won't have to squeeze through the crowd.

Translated from Vietnamese

Hoi An's ancient town is much more compact than many people think — the heritage core spans only a few hundred meters in each direction, and you can walk through the whole thing in one half-day. The real challenge isn't the size, but rather when you visit and which route you take.

Chùa Cầu, Hội An

The daily flow of visitors is fairly predictable: tour groups arrive the most around 9–11 AM and 6–9 PM. Between those two time slots, the streets become quite empty, but that's also when the sun is at its harshest.

If you only have three hours, the 3–6 PM window works best. The sun has softened, the morning tour group has left, the evening group hasn't arrived yet, and you'll be there in time to watch the lanterns light up at dusk.

Suggested Order:

3:00 PM — Enter from the Chùa Cầu (Japanese Covered Bridge) side, and buy your sightseeing ticket at the booth at the start of the street. The ticket is valid per visit and allows entry to a number of sites on the list — just ask the staff and they'll guide you. • 15:20 — Visit Cau Pagoda first, since the later you go in the afternoon, the more crowded it gets with people lining up to take photos. • 15:45 — Visit one of the old houses (Tan Ky or Phung Hung) and one of the assembly halls (Phuc Kien is the largest). • 4:45 PM — Head to the Hoai River bank and relax with a coffee. • 5:30 PM — Return to the main street as the lanterns start to glow.

A few things to avoid wasting time on:

• Don't try to visit every single spot on your ticket. Two places explored thoroughly beat five places rushed through. • The Old Quarter bans motorbikes during many time slots — park outside and walk in, don't waste time circling around looking for a spot. • Weekends and full-moon days are noticeably busier than weekdays.
