Clam Rice — A Rustic, Full-Flavored Dish from Central Vietnam at Da Nang

Cơm hến is one of the most representative rustic dishes of Huế that came with Central Vietnamese people to Da Nang and has become an indispensable specialty. With just a bowl of cold rice, richly flavored stir-fried baby clams, roasted peanuts, fresh herbs, banana blossom, crispy pork cracklings, and a touch of fermented shrimp paste, the dish already brings together the full flavors of sour, spicy, salty, sweet, and nutty richness. What makes Đà Nẵng mussel rice special is how it's served alongside a bowl of clear, fragrant mussel broth with a naturally sweet aroma. The person mixes all the ingredients evenly, adds a little clam broth to soften the rice, and eats it with green chili and homemade chili powder.
In Da Nang, you can find delicious "com hen" (baby clam rice) in the Nguyen Chi Thanh area, Con Market, or the sidewalk eateries near Dragon Bridge. The price is only about 20,000–30,000 VND per bowl, suitable for both students and tourists. Morning or late afternoon is the ideal time to enjoy it, when the clams have just been cooked and are fragrant and hot.
