Northern Vietnam Free Travel Day 3｜Ascending Vietnam's Rooftop, Fansipan × Challenging the Rong May Glass Bridge Above the Clouds

Preface Today is our highlight in Sapa: climbing Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam, and in the afternoon heading to the newly opened Rong May Glass Bridge (Cloud Bridge). Although this is a self-guided itinerary today, in order to avoid the cable car and the sightseeing crowds, we set off at 7:30, making the most of the early morning light and the best moment for views. For the Fansipan trip, our full route is Sun Plaza → Monorail (Muong Hoa) → Hoang Lien / Cable Car Station → Cable Car up the mountain → (optional) Summit Funicular/hike to the peak. This combination lets you take in Fansipan's sea of clouds and temple complex in the shortest amount of time. Travel guides also commonly recommend this same route and ticket combo — "Monorail + Cable Car + Summit Funicular" — as the full package, since it's more effortless and keeps your schedule under control. Today's Itinerary There are two main optional activities on this day: 1️⃣ Fansipan Cable Car + Funicular + Buffet Set: NT$1380 per person 2️⃣ Rong May Glass Bridge Ticket: ₫500,000 (approx. NT$600 per person) In the morning we climbed to the highest peak in Vietnam, and in the afternoon we experienced the suspended glass bridge — both attractions were absolutely stunning and full of surprises, letting us truly feel the magnificent grandeur of the Sapa valley. Muong Hoa Monorail & Sun Plaza Departure 8:00 Arrive at Sun Plaza (Sapa's landmark building), where you'll board the Muong Hoa Monorail (a mountain mini-train) heading toward the cable car station. Last time I came during New Year's it was packed with crowds, but this time there were very few passengers on the train, so I could leisurely enjoy the morning mist over Cat Cat Village, the terraced fields, and the valley from the window. This monorail ride takes about 10 minutes, and it's highly recommended for anyone who wants to save energy while taking photos along the way.

Cable Car Through the Clouds (Hoang Lien → Fansipan) After arriving at the Hoang Lien cable car station, transfer to the world-famous three-cable ropeway. The journey takes about 15–20 minutes, as the cable car slowly climbs over deep valleys and through the clouds, gradually revealing the sweeping mountain ridgelines ahead. On a clear day, the entire Muong Hoa Valley and the Sa Pa terraced rice fields unfold before your eyes — a breathtakingly spectacular view, and one of the most anticipated moments of the trip.

Summiting: The Choice Between Hiking and the Peak Rail (Funicular) After reaching the upper cable car station, you'll first pass through a cluster of temples, an archway, and a walking trail. Here, you can choose to hike to the summit on foot or purchase a ticket to ride the Peak Rail (some tickets list the Peak Rail as an optional add-on). Hiking up takes about 45–60 minutes (depending on your stamina and how many photo stops you make), and the path passes by the Big Buddha, the statue of Guanyin, and several temple platforms; those taking the tram can easily reach a spot near the summit, saving their energy. We split into two groups: I chose the hiking group, so I got to admire the magnificent Big Buddha statue and the Guanyin statue up close along the way.

Fortunately, the clouds and mist dispersed briefly, allowing us to clearly capture the magnificent full view of the Great Buddha.

Summit Activities and Photography (Including Visits to the Temple, Great Buddha, and Viewing Platform) After reaching the summit, the 3,143-meter Fansipan Peak Marker is a must-photograph landmark for every visitor. The cable car group arrives first and rests at the café, and after our hiking group climbs up, we all meet at the summit for a group photo before descending together. At noon, sunlight pours down on the golden Buddha, and paired with the mist among the mountains, the scenery is solemn and sacred.

Buffet Lunch and Descent I originally thought the buffet was located at the summit, but after asking, I found out that we had to return to the Shapa Cable Car Station to eat. On the way back, the clouds and mist had thinned out even more, and we could clearly see the lines of the terraced fields in the valley and the distant town — one of the most spectacular views of the whole trip. By the time we reached the restaurant it was already 13:40, and it was still crowded, but the dishes were plentiful and the meat and vegetarian sections were clearly separated, which was very considerate for vegetarians.

Heading to Rong May (Cloud Bridge) We depart around 3:00 PM from the Sa Ba Cable Car Station, and there are plenty of scenic spots outside the cable car station perfect for photos. After departure, we pass by the Love Waterfall and the Silver Waterfall along the way, arriving at the Rong May scenic area entrance in about half an hour. After purchasing tickets, take a shuttle bus to the glass elevator entrance. Rong May is generally open from 8:00 to 18:00, and you can purchase tickets on-site.

Elevator Ride, Adaptation Zone, and Glass Bridge Experience The glass elevator first rises inside the mountain cave, and after about 40 seconds it breaks through the mountain wall, going directly to the high-altitude platform. The entire elevator ride takes about 2 and a half minutes, and after exiting the elevator you can immediately reach the viewing area and the glass bridge.

It's inevitable to feel a bit nervous the first time you step onto the glass bridge, but after a few minutes you can comfortably take photos. There's a café beside the bridge where you can rest while enjoying the scenery. When sunlight and mist intertwine, the valley looks as if it's floating among the clouds. As evening approaches, the crowds gradually thin out, and we managed to capture a few stunning photos under the soft light.

Also, we unexpectedly caught a golden cicada — its wings shimmered with golden light, especially beautiful under the sunlight, and it became a little surprise for the day.

Trip Summary and Recommendations The majestic mountain scenery and sea of clouds at Fansipan, together with the suspended cable experience at Rong May, are a classic combination not to be missed in Sa Pa, northern Vietnam. One offers the solemnity of ancient mountains and temples, the other the thrill of modern engineering and cloud-sea views. If time and stamina allow, these two attractions are well worth scheduling on the same day. Practical suggestions (helpful tips): Departure Time: It's recommended to depart early between 7:00–7:30 AM (for example, we departed at 7:30 and arrived at Sun Plaza by 8:00), which can significantly reduce waiting time in queues. Ticket Options: If you'd prefer not to climb 600 steps, it's recommended to purchase the complete package combination of Muong Hoa monorail + cable car + summit electric train (which saves effort and keeps travel time manageable). Clothing and Equipment: The temperature at the summit is lower and weather changes rapidly, so consider bringing a lightweight down jacket or windproof coat and a compact rain shelter. Time allocation: Fansipan requires setting aside half a day (about 5–6 hours), including the way up, the way down, and time for meals; Rong May is recommended to be visited for 2–2.5 hours on site.
