Northern Vietnam Free Travel Day 3 | Ascending Vietnam's Rooftop Fansipan × Challenging the Rong May Glass Bridge Above the Clouds and Mist

Preface Today marks the highlight of our time in Sapa: climbing Fansipan, the highest peak in Vietnam, and in the afternoon heading to the newly opened Rong May Glass Bridge (Cloud Bridge). Although this was a self-guided itinerary, in order to avoid the cable car crowds and tourist rush, we set off at 7:30, making the most of the early morning light and the best viewing conditions. 番西邦行程，我們從Sun Plaza → 單軌（Muong Hoa）→ Hoang Lien / 纜車站 → 纜車上山 →（選擇性）峰頂電車/步行攻頂 的完整動線，這套組合能讓你在最短時間內把 Fansipan 的雲海與寺廟群一次看完。相關的動線與搭乘選項在遊客資訊上也常被建議採用「單軌+纜車+峰頂電車」的全套組合比較省力且時間可控。 今日行程 Today there are two main paid itineraries: 1️⃣ Fansipan Monorail + Cable Car + Buffet Package: NT$1380 per person 2️⃣ Rong May Glass Bridge Tickets: ₫500,000 (approximately NT$600 per person) Climb Vietnam's highest peak in the morning, experience the stunning suspended glass bridge in the afternoon—both attractions are filled with breathtaking views and surprises, letting us deeply appreciate the magnificent splendor of Sapa Valley. Muong Hoa Monorail and Sun Plaza Departure Arrive at Sun Plaza (Sapa's iconic landmark building) at 8:00 and board the Muong Hoa Monorail (mountain train) heading to the cable car station. The last time we came during New Year's, it was packed with tourists, but this time the train cars were relatively empty, allowing us to leisurely enjoy the morning mist drifting between Cau Cau village, terraced fields, and the valleys from our window seats. This monorail segment takes about 10 minutes and is highly recommended for those who want to conserve energy while moving around and taking photos.

Cable Car Through a Sea of Clouds (Hoang Lien → Fansipan) After arriving at the Hoang Lien cable car station, transfer to the world-renowned three-cable ropeway. The journey takes about 15–20 minutes as the cable car slowly climbs over deep valleys and through the clouds, gradually revealing the sweeping mountain ranges before your eyes. On clear days, the entire Muong Hoa Valley and the terraced rice fields of Sapa unfold before you—a breathtakingly magnificent view, and one of the most eagerly anticipated highlights of the trip.

Reaching the Summit: Choosing Between Hiking and the Peak Rail (Funicular) After arriving at the upper cable car station, you'll first pass through a cluster of temples, ornamental gates, and walking paths. From here, you can choose to hike up to the summit on foot, or purchase a ticket to ride the Peak Rail (some tickets list the Peak Rail as an optional add-on). Hiking up takes about 45–60 minutes (depending on your stamina and how often you stop for photos), and the route passes the Big Buddha statue, the Guanyin statue, and several temple platforms; those who take the rail can easily reach a point near the summit, saving their energy. We split into two groups — I chose the hiking group, so I could admire the magnificent Big Buddha and Guanyin statues up close along the way.

Fortunately, the clouds briefly parted, allowing us to clearly capture the magnificent full view of the Great Buddha.

Summit Activities and Photos (Including Temple Visit, Great Buddha, and Viewing Platform) After reaching the summit, the 3,143-meter Fansipan Peak Marker is a must-photograph landmark for every visitor. The cable car group arrives first and rests at the café, and once our hiking group reaches the top, we meet up for a group photo before descending together. At noon, the sunlight pours over the golden Buddha statue, and combined with the mist over the mountains, the scenery is solemn and sacred.

Buffet Lunch and Descent I thought the buffet would be located at the mountain summit, but after asking around I discovered we had to return to the Sa Pa cable car station to eat. On the way back, the clouds and mist had thinned out even more, and we could clearly see the terraced fields lining the valley and the small town in the distance — one of the most spectacular sights of this trip. We didn't arrive at the restaurant until 13:40, and it was still packed with people, but the dishes were plentiful and the meat and vegetarian sections were clearly separated, which was very thoughtful for vegetarians.

Heading to Rong May (Cloud Bridge) We depart from Sa Pa Cable Car Station around 3:00 PM. There are also plenty of scenic photo spots outside the cable car station. After departure, we pass by Love Waterfall and Silver Waterfall along the way, arriving at the entrance of Rong May scenic area in approximately half an hour. After purchasing tickets, take the shuttle bus to the glass elevator entrance. Rong May is generally open from 8:00-18:00, and tickets can be purchased on-site.

Elevator Ride, Adjustment Zone, and Glass Bridge Experience The glass elevator first rises inside the mountain cave, and after about 40 seconds it breaks through the mountainside, going straight up to the high-altitude platform. The entire elevator ride takes about 2 and a half minutes, and once you step out, you'll arrive directly at the viewing area and the glass bridge.

It's hard not to feel a bit nervous when you first step onto the transparent glass bridge, but after a few minutes you'll be relaxed enough to take photos comfortably. There's a café by the bridge where you can rest while enjoying the scenery. When sunlight and mist intertwine, the valley looks as if it's floating among the clouds. As evening approaches, the crowds gradually thin out, and we managed to capture some absolutely stunning photos in the soft light.

Additionally, we unexpectedly found a golden cicada — its wings shimmered with a golden glow, and it was particularly beautiful in the sunlight, becoming a delightful surprise of that day.

Trip Summary and Recommendations The majestic mountain views and sea of clouds at Fansipan, along with the thrilling suspended experience at Rong May, are classic combinations you absolutely shouldn't miss when visiting Sapa in North Vietnam. One offers the solemnity of ancient mountains and temples, while the other provides the visual thrill of modern engineering set against the sea of clouds. If time and physical energy permit, these two attractions are definitely worth arranging to visit on the same day. Practical Suggestions (Helpful Reminders): Departure Time: We recommend departing early in the morning between 7:00–7:30 (like we did at 7:30, arriving at Sun Plaza at 8:00) to significantly reduce waiting times. Ticket Options: If you'd rather not climb 600 steps of stairs, we recommend purchasing the complete package of Muong Hoa monorail + cable car + summit tram (saves effort and gives you better control over your time). Clothing and Gear: The temperature at the summit is lower and weather changes quickly, so consider bringing a lightweight down jacket or windproof coat, along with a compact rain cover. Time allocation: For Fansipan, including the round trip and a meal, we recommend setting aside half a day (about 5–6 hours); for Rong May, we recommend allowing 2–2.5 hours for the on-site visit.
