Northern Vietnam Self-Guided Tour Day 4 | Sa Pa Hiking × Mountain Terraced Fields × Ethnic Minority Village Exploration

A breeze drifted across the layered rice terraces, and laughter echoed through the valley. There was no blazing sunset, no bustle of the night, yet in the stillness one could see the truest face of Sapa. Foreword Today officially begins our three-day trek in Sapa. Our biggest worry is still the weather—because a few days before departure, a strong typhoon was battering Hong Kong and Macau, and we were once worried for a while that northern Vietnam would also be affected. When I drew back the curtains in the early morning, although the fog and clouds outside hadn't cleared yet, the distant mountains appeared faintly through the mist.But the sun slowly emerged from behind the mist, and in that moment, we all breathed a sigh of relief. Hiking in Sa Pa is different from Nepal — it doesn't require great physical strength, nor does it aim to conquer high mountains; instead, it's more like a journey of "walking through the scenery." Today's Itinerary After breakfast, we'll gather in the hotel lobby at 8:20 to check out, then take the minibus arranged by the travel agency to the starting point of the hike — near Pao's Sapa Leisure Hotel. Our guide, Little Sheep (a local Hmong person), will first introduce today's hiking route.Just as he was explaining, several women in traditional dress carrying woven baskets had quietly gathered around, smiling and asking: "Where are you from?" This is a business practice unique to Sapa — local women will accompany you on the hike, chat with you, and help you along the way, and when you arrive at the rest stop at noon, they'll take out their handmade handicrafts to sell. Even though you know it's a business model, the sincere interaction throughout the journey always makes you willing to buy something to support them.

Hiking Begins: From Slippery Mountain Path to Open Terraced Fields The first half of the journey after departure was the most difficult, requiring us to switch from the paved road to a muddy mountain path. Because of heavy rain the night before, the road was slippery, and one careless step could easily cause a fall. At that time, the help from those women was very practical—some proactively offered their hands, others reminded us where to step safely, allowing us to safely navigate through the initial section of the path.

Enjoying the scenery along the way, mountains wreathed in clouds, golden terraced fields, and distant villages weave together into a tranquil picture. By the end of September, most of the rice paddies have already been harvested, leaving only slightly yellowed rice stalks covering the hillsides, though a few fields are still being harvested, revealing the unique charm found only in the mountainous regions of northern Vietnam.

This route is Sa Pa's most popular hiking trail, and it's also the "must-do on day one" route for most groups. Along the way you'll see quite a few backpackers from Europe and America, traveling light, taking photos as they walk, all with relaxed smiles on their faces.

Mountainside Rest Stop × Stunning Terraced Fields After walking for about an hour and a half, we finally arrived at the first rest stop. The wooden pavilion sold cold drinks and snacks, and right in front of us lay the entire expanse of terraced fields and the valley. Resting in scenery like this, sipping a drink, was truly a luxurious pleasure. In that moment, we were genuinely grateful to the heavens for giving us such clear, sunny weather.

After a brief rest, we continued forward, the path winding through valleys, occasionally passing small streams and wooden bridges. At 10:50, Little Yang told us 'the rest is all easy walking now,' a comment that brought relief to everyone. Just then, the women who had been accompanying us the whole way started pulling out cloth bags and bracelets to sell—colorful embroidery, bamboo woven baskets, woven cloth bags, each one filled with local craftsmanship. Since I didn't really need anything, I gave 50,000 Vietnamese dong to the woman who had walked the entire journey with me, as a token of appreciation for her companionship along the way.

Those who make a purchase will receive a small bracelet, which we jokingly call proof of shopping.

Muong Hoa Valley × Mountain Lunch Around 12:30 noon, we started descending into Muong Hoa Valley, and the scenery along the way was equally beautiful.

Before departure, Xiao Yang asked us whether we wanted to take the "short route" or the "long route," and everyone chose the long route without hesitation—the weather was great today, and we didn't want to miss any scenery. As a result, we didn't arrive at the lunch spot until 12:50. The restaurant was simple, with set dishes arranged by the travel agency. Although the food was quite ordinary, in such a mountain forest setting with a gentle breeze blowing, any food became especially delicious. After the meal, we sat outside looking at the distant rice fields and river valley, feeling that it was all so peaceful and beautiful.

Mountain Light Homestay After resting for an hour, we continued on foot, and arrived at tonight's lodging, Mountain Light Homestay, a bit after two in the afternoon.

The guesthouse is a typical wooden structure, with only mattresses and thin quilts in the rooms, but outside the windows stretches an expansive view of terraced fields. Opening the windows allows you to see the serene and tranquil landscape of the terraced fields.

We walked a total of 8.65 kilometers for the whole day. Except for the muddy and difficult first half, the rest of the route was fairly easy. After checking in, we took turns showering and changing clothes, then freshened up briefly and caught a short nap.

There's a "Vietnamese Cuisine Experience Activity" at five o'clock in the evening. I originally thought I'd learn a few dishes, but it turned out to just be wrapping spring rolls—slightly disappointing.

Dinner was prepared by the host of the guesthouse, with a rich variety of dishes, and they even specially brought out their own home-brewed rice wine. Everyone raised their glasses for a little drink together, and the wine tasted strong yet carried a faint sweetness.

In the evening, the guesthouse didn't have much entertainment, so everyone chatted among themselves, played pool, or rested early to prepare for the challenges of the next day. Itinerary Summary and Recommendations The first day of trekking in Sapa is the most representative route. You'll pass through muddy mountain paths, sprawling rice terraces, and walk alongside Hmong women, experiencing the most authentic mountain life of northern Vietnam. This is not just a trek, but more like a journey crossing nature and culture. Small Recommendations: It's recommended to wear non-slip hiking shoes and bring trekking poles (especially for the slippery front section). You can prepare small bills (₫20,000–₫50,000) as tips for the women who help you. If you have enough time, you can stay at a "Homestay with a view", and experience a truly authentic night in the valley.
