North Vietnam Free Travel Day 4｜Sapa Trekking × Mountain Terraced Fields × Visiting Ethnic Minority Villages

A breeze swept across the layered terraces, and laughter echoed through the valley. There was no dazzling sunset, no bustling nightlife, yet in the stillness, one could see the truest face of Sapa. Introduction Today officially begins our three-day trekking trip in Sapa. Our biggest worry is still the weather — a few days before we set off, a powerful typhoon was ravaging Hong Kong and Macau, and for a while we worried that northern Vietnam would be affected too. When I drew back the curtains at dawn, the clouds and mist outside hadn't fully cleared, and the distant mountains appeared only faintly, as if half-hidden.But as the sun slowly emerged from behind the mist, we all breathed a sigh of relief in that moment. Hiking in Sa Pa is different from hiking in Nepal — it doesn't require great physical strength, nor is it about conquering high peaks, but rather it feels like a journey of "walking through scenery." Today's Itinerary After breakfast, we'll gather in the hotel lobby at 8:20 to check out, then take the minibus arranged by the travel agency to the starting point of the hike — near Pao's Sapa Leisure Hotel. Our guide, Little Sheep (a local Hmong person), will first introduce today's hiking route.Just as he was explaining, several women in traditional dress, carrying woven baskets on their backs, quietly gathered around, smiling and asking, "Where are you from?

The Hike Begins: From Slippery Mountain Trails to Open Terraced Fields The first half after setting out was the hardest, cutting from the paved road onto a muddy mountain path. Because of the heavy rain the night before, the road was slippery, and it would have been easy to slip if we weren't careful. This was when the women's help became truly practical — some reached out to hold our hands, while others pointed out where the footing was solid, helping us safely get through the first stretch of the trail.

As you walk along, enjoy the scenery where misty mountains, golden rice terraces, and distant villages blend together to create a serene landscape. By late September, most rice fields have been harvested, leaving only faintly yellowed rice stalks scattered across the hillsides, with just a few areas still in the midst of harvesting, showcasing the unique beauty distinctive to northern Vietnam's mountain regions.

This route is Sa Pa's most popular hiking trail, and it's also the one most groups take as their "must-do first day" route. Along the way you'll spot quite a few Western backpackers traveling light, taking photos as they walk, with relaxed smiles all over their faces.

Hillside Rest Stop × Spectacular Terraced Fields After walking for about an hour and a half, we finally reached the first rest point. A wooden pavilion sold cold drinks and snacks, and before our eyes lay expansive terraced fields and valleys. Resting under such scenery and drinking water was truly a luxurious indulgence. At that moment, we genuinely thanked heaven for providing such clear and pleasant weather.

After a brief rest we continued onward, the path winding between the valleys, crossing small streams and wooden bridges from time to time. At 10:50, Little Sheep told us "it's all easy walking from here," and everyone felt a huge sense of relief at those words. Just then, the women who had been accompanying us the whole way began taking out cloth pouches and bracelets to sell — colorful embroidery, small bamboo baskets, woven fabric bags, each one filled with local craftsmanship and ingenuity. Since I didn't really need anything, I took out 50,000 Vietnamese dong and gave it to the woman who had walked the entire route with me, as a token of thanks for her company along the way.

Those who purchase will receive a small bracelet, which we jokingly call "proof of purchase.

Muong Hoa Valley × Lunch in the Mountains At around 12:30 noon, we began heading downhill into the Muong Hoa Valley, with equally beautiful scenery all along the way.

Before setting off, Xiaoyang asked us whether we wanted to take the "short route" or the "long route," and everyone chose the long route without hesitation — the weather was so nice today that we didn't want to miss any of the scenery. As a result, we didn't arrive at the lunch spot until 12:50.

Mountain Light Homestay After resting for an hour, we continued on foot and arrived at tonight's lodging, Mountain Light Homestay, around a little after two in the afternoon.

The guesthouse is a typical wooden building — the room has only a mattress and a thin quilt, but right outside the window lies a whole expanse of beautiful terraced rice fields. Just open the window and you can take in the tranquil scenery of the terraces.

We walked a total of 8.65 kilometers today. Except for the muddy and difficult first half, the rest of the trail was fairly easy. After checking in, we took turns showering and changing clothes, and after a quick freshen-up we napped for a little while.

There was a "Vietnamese Cuisine Experience Activity" at five in the evening. I originally thought I'd get to learn a few dishes, but it turned out to just be wrapping spring rolls, which was a bit disappointing.

Dinner was prepared by the host of the guesthouse, with a rich variety of dishes, and they even specially brought out their own homemade rice wine. Everyone raised their glasses for a little drink together — the wine was strong, yet carried a faint, gentle sweetness.

There isn't much entertainment at the homestay at night — everyone chats among themselves, plays billiards, or turns in early to get ready for the next day's challenge. Itinerary Summary & Tips The first day of the Sapa trek is the most iconic route. You'll pass through muddy mountain trails and open terraced fields, walking alongside Hmong women, experiencing the most authentic mountain life of northern Vietnam. This isn't just a trek — it's more like a journey through nature and culture. A little tip: We recommend wearing non-slip hiking shoes and bringing trekking poles (especially since the early section can be slippery). Prepare small bills (₫20,000–₫50,000) as tips for the women who help you. If time allows, stay at a "Homestay with a scenic view" to experience a real night in the valley.
