North Vietnam Freedom Trip Day 4 | Sapa Trekking × Mountain Terraced Rice Fields × Ethnic Minority Village Visit

A gentle breeze swept across the layered terraces, and laughter echoed through the valley. There was no blazing sunset, no bustling nightlife—yet in the quiet stillness, one could see the truest face of Sapa. Preface Today officially begins our three-day trekking journey in Sapa. The biggest worry is still the weather—because a few days before we set off, a powerful typhoon was wreaking havoc in Hong Kong and Macau, and for a while we worried that northern Vietnam would be affected too. When I pulled back the curtains this morning, the mist outside hadn't cleared yet, and the distant mountains appeared and disappeared through the haze.But the sun slowly emerged from behind the mist, and in that moment, we all breathed a sigh of relief. Trekking in Sapa is different from Nepal — it doesn't require great physical strength, nor does it aim to conquer high mountains. Instead, it feels like a journey of "walking through the scenery." Today's Itinerary After breakfast, we will gather in the hotel lobby at 8:20 to check out, then take a minibus arranged by the travel agency to the starting point of the trek — near Pao's Sapa Leisure Hotel. Our guide, Little Sheep (a local Hmong person), will first introduce today's trekking route.Just as he was explaining, several women in traditional dress carrying woven baskets quietly gathered around, smiling and asking, "Where are you from?" This is a business practice unique to Sapa — local women will accompany you on your trek, chat with you, and help you along the way. When you reach the rest stop at noon, they'll take out their handmade crafts to sell. Even though you know it's a business model, the genuine companionship along the entire route always makes you want to buy something to support them.

The hike begins: from a slippery mountain trail to open terraced fields The first half of the journey after setting out was the toughest, as we had to cut from the paved road onto a muddy mountain trail. Because of the heavy rain the night before, the path was slippery, and one careless step could easily send you sliding. This was when the women's help proved truly invaluable — some took the initiative to hold our hands, others reminded us where to step safely, helping us get through the first stretch of the trail safely.

Enjoying the scenery along the way, mountains wrapped in clouds, golden terraced fields, and distant villages weave together into a tranquil picture. By late September, most of the rice fields have already been harvested, leaving hillsides covered in pale yellow rice stalks, though a few spots are still being harvested, showing off the unique charm of the mountainous region of northern Vietnam.

This route is the most popular hiking trail in Sapa, and it's also the "must-do first day" itinerary for most groups. Along the way, you can spot quite a few backpackers from Europe and America, traveling light, taking photos as they walk, all with relaxed smiles on their faces.

Mountainside Rest Stop × Breathtaking Terraced Fields After about an hour and a half of walking, we finally arrived at the first rest stop. The wooden pavilion sold cold drinks and snacks, and right before our eyes lay the entire expanse of terraced fields and valley. Resting and sipping a drink amid such scenery truly felt like a luxurious pleasure. In that moment, we were genuinely grateful to the heavens for granting us such clear, sunny weather.

短暫休息後繼續前行，路途蜿蜒於山谷之間，不時經過小溪與木橋。 10:50，小羊告訴我們「後面都好走了」，這句話對大家來說如釋重負。就在這時，那些陪伴我們一路的婦女們開始拿出布包與手鍊販售——色彩繽紛的刺繡、竹編小籃子、織布包，每一樣都蘊含當地的巧思。因為我沒有真的需要什麼，所以掏出 5 萬越盾給那位陪我走完全程的婦人，算是對她一路相伴的謝意。

Muong Hoa Valley × Lunch in the Mountains At around 12:30 pm, we start heading downhill into Muong Hoa Valley, and the scenery along the way is just as beautiful.

Before departure, Lamb asked us whether we wanted to take the "shortcut" or the "long way", and without hesitation everyone chose the long way — the weather was so nice today that we didn't want to miss any scenery. As a result, we didn't arrive at the lunch spot until 12:50. The restaurant was quite simple, with a set meal arranged by the travel agency. The dishes were ordinary, but in an environment like that, surrounded by mountains and forest with a gentle breeze blowing, any food became especially delicious. After the meal, we sat outside gazing at the distant rice fields and the river valley, feeling that it was all so peaceful and beautiful.

Mountain Light Homestay

The guesthouse is a typical wooden building — the room has only a mattress and a thin blanket, but just outside the window lies a whole panorama of terraced rice fields, so opening the window reveals a tranquil terraced landscape.

We walked a total of 8.65 km for the day, and apart from the muddy, difficult first half, the rest of the route was fairly easy. After checking in, we took turns showering and changing clothes, then had a quick freshen-up before napping for a while.

There was a "Vietnamese Cuisine Experience Activity" at five in the evening. I thought we'd get to learn a few dishes, but it turned out to be just wrapping spring rolls, which was a bit disappointing.

Dinner was prepared by the guesthouse owner, with a rich variety of dishes, and they even specially served their own home-brewed rice wine. Everyone raised their glasses for a little drink — the wine was strong yet carried a faint hint of sweetness.

There isn't much entertainment at the homestay at night, so everyone chats, plays billiards, or turns in early to get ready for the next day's challenge. Trip Summary and Tips The first day of the Sapa trek is the most iconic route. You'll pass through muddy mountain trails and open rice terraces, walking alongside Hmong women to experience the most authentic mountain life of Northern Vietnam. This isn't just a trek — it's more like a journey through nature and culture. A little tip: We recommend wearing non-slip hiking shoes and bringing trekking poles (especially for the slippery early section). Bring small bills (₫20,000–₫50,000) as tips for the women helping out. If you have enough time, consider staying at a "homestay with a view," and experience a truly authentic valley night.
