Today we joined a day tour to the suburbs of Athens arranged by the travel agency, delving into two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Byzantine-style "Hosios Loukas Monastery" and the sacred site of Greek mythology, "Delphi." Even though our flight was delayed last night and we didn't check in until nearly 2am, we still got up early to set off on this cultural exploration journey full of history and mythological color. 📍Today's route: Depart from central Athens → Hosios Loukas Monastery → Lunch in the mountain town of Arachova → Delphi archaeological site and museum → Return to Athens Early morning departure: the journey of dragging ourselves out of bed begins Last night, because of a delayed flight, we didn't fall asleep until two in the morning, and this morning we still had to muster our energy to greet the day's cultural exploration. At nine o'clock, our guide Kai Kai showed up punctually at our apartment. He's Turkish, once lived in Taiwan for two years, and speaks fluent, warm-hearted Chinese. Hosios Loukas Monastery: A Byzantine World on the Hillside ✅ World Heritage Site | Inscribed on the UNESCO list, recognized since 1990 alongside Nea Moni and Daphni as classic representatives of Byzantine architecture. ✅ Byzantine Architectural Features: Built from a mix of stone, brick, and marble, the interior is adorned with golden mosaic icons, presenting a striking contrast between its plain exterior and lavish interior. 🔸 The main abbey building: constructed in the 10th century AD to commemorate the Greek hermit Saint Loukas.

🔸 Tomb of the Saint: Believers hold that resting alongside the saint brings sacred blessings, and Orthodox faithful still come today to pay homage.

Lunch in Arachova: A Brief Stop for a Simple Meal in the Mountain Town After leaving the monastery, we came to Arachova for a simple lunch. This mountain town lies beneath the Parnassus mountain range and is famous for its traditional handwoven textiles, local cheeses, and its reputation as a ski resort.

Delphi Archaeological Site: The Center of the World and the Place of the Oracle ✅ World Cultural Heritage | Delphi was already an important religious center as early as the 8th century BC, and in Greek mythology it was regarded as the "center of the world." 💡 Origin of the legend: Zeus released two eagles from the two ends of the world, and they finally met at this very site, establishing the location of the "navel of the world (Omphalos)." 🔸 The sacred path: Starting from the bathing place at the foot of the mountain and going all the way up, believers had to bathe and purify themselves, bring offerings, and pray to the priestess for an oracle.

Delphi Museum: A Treasury of Art from Myth to Empire After entering the Delphi Archaeological Museum, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the sacred and historical background of this land. Return trip and practical information 🚐 The return trip took about 2 hours and 40 minutes. The travel agency had warned beforehand that going over the chartered bus's time limit would incur a penalty fee, but fortunately our guide Kaikai coordinated successfully in advance, and we made it back to Athens smoothly by 6:50 in the evening. 🔸 Travel tips: • It's recommended to wear comfortable sneakers, as the site requires climbing quite a few steps • Booking a guide can enrich the commentary, otherwise the information provided is rather limited. Grocery shopping and evening life in Athens In the evening, we did big grocery shopping at a supermarket recommended by our guide Kai Kai, stocking up on meals and snacks for the next three days, spending about 1,800 NT dollars — the prices were more affordable than we expected. After returning to the apartment, we cooked dinner, did laundry, and packed our bags. Staying in an apartment-style accommodation gave the trip more of a "lived-in" feel, and made a long journey feel less exhausting.
