[Turkey Freedom Trip Day 4] Hot Air Balloons Rising and the Wondrous Rock Forest: The Magical Morning and Dusk of Cappadocia

Itinerary Overview We barely got to bed after one in the morning, only to get up again at four — time for Cappadocia's most iconic activity: the hot air balloon flight. Starting today, our itinerary was fully planned and arranged by Encore Tour, including yesterday's airport transfer and today's Chinese-speaking guide, with everything flowing smoothly and thoughtfully organized. We took in the sunrise over Cappadocia from above, then went on to a full day touring the classic sights, including Love Valley, Monks Valley, the Göreme Open Air Museum, and sunset at Rose Valley — we even ran into a sudden minor car accident along the way. A thrilling and unforgettable day! 📍Today's route: Hotel gathering → Hot air balloon ride → Nap → Love Valley → Monks Valley → Camel Rock → Göreme Open Air Museum → Red Valley → Dinner in town Early morning hot air balloon flight: the beauty of ascending and a small regret We gathered at the hotel at around 4:30 in the morning, but one of the groups went to the wrong hotel. Fortunately, the driver arranged by Encore Tour was willing to accommodate and specially made a detour into town to pick them up, so the trip could continue smoothly.We arrived at the launch site around 5:15, and the sky was already filled with hot air balloons rising one after another. We even spotted balloons from familiar travel agencies like Lion, Cola, and Phoenix drifting through the air. By this time, the balloon we had booked was ready, and the other passengers had already boarded. Luckily, we were placed in a corner spot, giving us an especially wide-open view. Before takeoff, the pilot gave a brief explanation of landing precautions, and then he ignited the burner and we lifted off. With Cappadocia's karst landscape set against a sky full of hot air balloons, the scenery was so spectacular that we couldn't stop pressing the shutter. However, this flight didn't go very high, only about 130 meters, and the pilot was also fairly conservative, not diving deep into the canyon to circle like the other balloons did, which was a bit of a shame. Still, being able to admire up close the scene of the terrain meeting the hot air balloons was deeply moving. After about 40 minutes of flying, we landed smoothly and popped champagne to celebrate.

▲ Champagne celebration Our Encore Tour Chinese-speaking guide took us on a wonderful tour of Cappadocia We returned to the hotel at 7 to catch a bit more sleep, and at 10 our Encore Tour guide, Ran-sheng, came to pick us up for a full day tour. He's Turkish, majored in Chinese in university, and even worked in China before, so his Chinese is extremely fluent, and his explanations were very thorough and patient. The places we visited today included: Göreme Viewpoint Love Valley Monks Valley (Paşabağ) Göreme Open Air Museum Camel Rock Red Valley Sunset Love Valley and Monks Valley: Romance and Mystery Amidst Wondrous Scenery Our first stop was the Göreme viewpoint, where the guide briefly explained how Cappadocia's terrain was formed: volcanic ash and rock layers from ancient eruptions were shaped by wind erosion into today's ever-changing rock pillar landscape. Next we arrived at Love Valley, so named because couples used to often meet here for romantic rendezvous. There are some decorative spots here perfect for photos — colorful wish trees paired with pure white stone pillar formations create an atmosphere that is both romantic and spectacular. The third stop was originally planned to be the Göreme Open Air Museum, but due to traffic, we headed to Monks Valley first instead. The rock pillars here have a distinctive shape and are known as "fairy chimneys," said to be the dwellings of little fairies. Early Christians also established monasteries here, carving out homes in the rock and living a simple, ascetic life.

▲Camel Rock, it really does look alike Upon arriving at the open-air museum, the crowds had thinned out quite a bit. This site preserves numerous Christian monasteries and rock-cut churches decorated with frescoes, and some churches still hold frescoes depicting the life of Jesus painted over 1,000 years ago. The most famous is the Dark Church, which requires a separate ticket (6 euros); because it receives little sunlight, the frescoes inside are exceptionally well preserved, making it the one spot in the museum you absolutely cannot miss. This place reminded me of Egypt's Valley of the Kings — another historical space woven together from color and faith.

▲黑暗教堂外部，內部禁止拍攝，我們也沒有買票進入 紅谷夕陽與驚險回程 原本行程到格雷梅露天博物館結束，冉生特別加碼帶我們去看夕陽，原訂前往玫瑰谷，但因當地剛好遇上連假，玫瑰谷周邊交通癱瘓，我們臨時改前往紅谷。紅谷也有很棒的觀景點，岩壁染上夕陽餘暉，氣氛溫柔靜謐，反而更有在地風情。 回程途中不慎遭後車追撞，導致我們又撞上前車，形成三車連環碰撞，肇事車輛竟還逃逸。所幸導遊機警處理，留下資訊後未耽誤太多時間。

Special thanks to our guide, Ran Sheng, for his professional companionship and attentive help throughout the day. Today's journey took us from a hot air balloon flight, to exploring the rock formations, and finally to the sunset over Red Valley — a rich and unforgettable day.
