[Turkey Solo Travel Day 4] Hot Air Balloons Rising and Stone Forest Wonders: Cappadocia's Magical Morning and Dusk

Trip Overview We barely got to bed after 1 a.m., only to get up again at 4 to welcome Cappadocia's most iconic activity — the hot air balloon flight. Starting from today, our entire itinerary is planned and arranged by Encore Tour, including yesterday's airport transfer and today's Chinese-speaking guide, and the whole pace flowed smoothly with thoughtful arrangements. We took in Cappadocia from the sky at sunrise, then went on a full day tour of the classic sights, including Love Valley, Monks Valley, Göreme Open Air Museum, and sunset at Rose Valley — we even ran into a sudden minor car accident along the way. A wonderful and unforgettable day! 📍Today's route: Hotel gathering → Hot air balloon ride → Nap time → Love Valley → Monks Valley → Camel Rock → Göreme Open Air Museum → Red Valley → Dinner in the city Early morning hot air balloon flight: the beauty of taking off and a small regret We agreed to gather at the hotel at around 4:30 AM, but one group of travelers went to the wrong hotel. Fortunately, the driver arranged by Encore Tour was willing to accommodate, specially making a detour into the city to pick them up, so the trip could continue smoothly.Around 5:15, we arrived at the launching site, with the sky already filled with hot air balloons ascending one after another, and we could see the familiar hot air balloons of various travel agencies—with designs of lions, Coca-Cola, and phoenixes—floating across the sky. At this moment, the hot air balloon we were about to board had completed its preparations, and all the other passengers had boarded as well. Fortunately, we were positioned in a corner spot with an especially wide view. Before takeoff, the pilot briefly explained the landing precautions, and then fired up the balloon to ascend. With Cappadocia's karst landscape combined with the sky full of hot air balloons, the scene was so magnificent that our cameras simply wouldn't stop. However, this flight altitude was not very high, approximately only 130 meters, and the pilot also flew quite conservatively, not spiraling deep into the canyon like other balloons do, which was somewhat of a shame. Yet, appreciating the landscape and the breathtaking scene of the hot air balloon meeting up close still moved us deeply. After flying for approximately 40 minutes, it landed smoothly, and we opened champagne to celebrate.

▲Champagne Celebration Encore Tour's Chinese-speaking guide took us on a wonderful tour of Cappadocia We returned to the hotel at 7 to catch a bit more sleep, and at 10 the guide arranged by Encore Tour, Ran Sheng, came to pick us up for our day tour. He is Turkish, majored in Chinese at university, and had also worked in China, so his Chinese was extremely fluent, and his explanations were very thorough and patient. The places we visited today included: Göreme Viewpoint Love Valley Monks Valley (Paşabağ) Göreme Open Air Museum Camel Rock Red Valley Sunset Love Valley and Monks Valley: Romance and Mystery Amid Wondrous Scenery Our first stop was the Göreme viewpoint, where the guide briefly explained how Cappadocia's terrain was formed: after volcanic eruptions, the volcanic ash and rock layers were shaped by wind erosion into the ever-changing pillar-like rock formations we see today. Next we arrived at Love Valley, so named because couples used to meet there for romantic trysts in the past. There are some decorative designs here perfect for photos — colorful wishing trees paired with pure white stone pillar formations create an atmosphere that is both romantic and spectacular. The third stop was originally planned to be the Göreme Open Air Museum, but due to traffic, we went to Monks Valley first instead. Here, the uniquely shaped rock pillars are known as "fairy chimneys," said to be the dwellings of little fairies. Early Christians also established monasteries here, carving houses out of the rock and living a simple, ascetic life.

▲ Panoramic view of Monks Valley, the stone pillar terrain looks like a fantasy world Camel Rock and the Göreme Open-Air Museum Before heading back to the open-air museum, we first went to Camel Rock, where these strangely shaped rocks have been imagined into all sorts of forms.

▲Camel Rock, it really does look alike By the time I reached the Open Air Museum, the crowds had thinned out quite a bit. This place preserves numerous Christian monasteries and fresco churches, and some of the churches still hold frescoes depicting the life of Jesus from over 1,000 years ago. The most famous is the Dark Church, which requires a separate ticket (6 euros) — because it rarely sees sunlight, the frescoes inside are extremely well preserved, making it the one spot in the museum you absolutely can't miss. This place reminded me of Egypt's Valley of the Kings, another historical space woven together from color and faith.

▲Dark Chapel exterior, interior photography prohibited, we didn't purchase tickets to enter Red Valley Sunset and Thrilling Return Journey Our itinerary was originally planned to end at Cappadocia Open-Air Museum, but Ransheng specially added an extra stop to show us the sunset. We had initially planned to visit Rose Valley, but since the holiday period happened to coincide with our visit, traffic around Rose Valley was completely congested. We changed our plans on the spot and headed to Red Valley instead. Red Valley also has a wonderful viewing spot where the rocky cliffs are bathed in sunset's afterglow, creating a gentle and tranquil atmosphere with authentic local charm. On the way back, we were unfortunately struck from behind by another vehicle, which caused us to collide with the car ahead, resulting in a three-car pile-up. Remarkably, the vehicle responsible even fled the scene. Fortunately, our guide handled the situation with quick thinking, and after providing our information, we weren't delayed by much.

From the hot air balloon flight this morning, to exploring the stone forests, and finally watching the sunset over Red Valley, this day's adventure has been rich and unforgettable.
