[Turkey Independent Travel Day 4] Hot Air Balloons Rising and the Wondrous Stone Forest: Cappadocia's Magical Morning and Dusk

Itinerary Overview We didn't get to bed until after 1am, and had to be up again at 4am to greet one of Cappadocia's most classic experiences — a hot air balloon flight. From today, the whole trip was planned and arranged by Encore Tour, including airport pickup the day before and a Chinese-speaking guide today, making everything flow smoothly and thoughtfully. We took in the sunrise over Cappadocia from the air, then spent the whole day touring the classic sights — Love Valley, Monks Valley, the Göreme Open-Air Museum, and sunset at Rose Valley — and even ran into a minor unexpected car accident along the way. A thrilling and unforgettable day! 📍Today's route: Hotel pickup → Hot air balloon ride → Catch-up sleep → Love Valley → Monks Valley → Camel Rock → Göreme Open Air Museum → Red Valley → Dinner in the city Early morning hot air balloon flight: the beauty of taking off and a small regret We gathered at the hotel at around 4:30 in the morning, but one group of travelers went to the wrong hotel. Luckily, the driver arranged by Encore Tour was willing to accommodate us and specially drove into the city to pick them up, so the trip could continue smoothly.We arrived at the launch site at around 5:15, and the sky was already filling with hot air balloons rising one after another. We even spotted balloons from familiar travel agencies like Lion, Cola, and Phoenix drifting through the air. By this time, the hot air balloon we had booked was already prepped, and the other passengers had all boarded. Luckily, we were placed in a corner spot, giving us an especially wide, open view. Before takeoff, the pilot gave a brief explanation of landing precautions, and then the burner fired up and we lifted off. With Cappadocia's karst landscape set against a sky full of hot air balloons, the view was so spectacular we couldn't stop pressing the shutter. However, this time the flight altitude wasn't very high, only about 130 meters, and the pilot was also a bit conservative, not flying deep into the canyon to circle around like the other balloons did, which was a bit of a shame. Still, being able to admire the terrain up close alongside the crossing hot air balloons was truly moving. After flying for about 40 minutes, we landed smoothly and popped open champagne to celebrate.

▲Champagne Celebration The Encore Tour Chinese-speaking guide took us on a journey through Cappadocia We returned to the hotel at 7am for a short nap, and at 10am the guide arranged by Encore Tour, Ran-sheng, came to pick us up for a day tour. He is Turkish, majored in Chinese in university, and had also worked in China, so his Chinese was extremely fluent, and his explanations were very thorough and patient. The sights we visited today included: Göreme Viewpoint Love Valley Monks Valley (Paşabağ) Göreme Open Air Museum Camel Rock Red Valley Sunset Love Valley and Monk Valley: Romance and Mystery Amid Stunning Scenery Our first stop was the Göreme viewpoint, where our guide briefly explained the geological origins of Cappadocia's landscape: the volcanic ash and rock layers left by ancient eruptions, shaped by wind erosion over time into the fantastically varied fairy chimney formations we see today. Next, we arrived at Love Valley, which got its name because couples used to rendezvous here in the past. The area features some decorative installations perfect for photos, with colorful wishing trees set against pure white stone formations, creating an atmosphere that is both romantic and spectacular. The third stop was originally planned to be the Göreme Open Air Museum, but due to traffic, we headed to Zelve Valley (Monks Valley) first instead. The rock pillars here have a unique shape and are known as "fairy chimneys," said to be the dwellings of little fairies. Early Christians also established monasteries here, carving houses out of the rock and living a simple, ascetic life.

▲Panoramic view of Monks Valley, the stone pillar terrain looks like a fantasy world Camel Rock and Göreme Open Air Museum Before heading back to the open-air museum, let's first visit Camel Rock — the oddly shaped rocks here have been imagined as all sorts of forms.

▲Camel Rock, it really does look quite similar By the time we arrived at the open-air museum, the crowds had thinned out quite a bit. Here, numerous Christian monasteries and rock-cut churches with frescoes have been preserved, and some of the churches still hold frescoes depicting the life of Jesus painted over 1,000 years ago. The most famous is the Dark Church, which requires a separate ticket (6 euros) — because it rarely gets sunlight, the frescoes inside are exceptionally well preserved, making it the one spot in the museum you absolutely cannot miss. This place reminded me of Egypt's Valley of the Kings, another historic space woven together from color and faith.

Red Valley Sunset and Thrilling Journey Back Our original itinerary was scheduled to end at Göreme Open-Air Museum, but our guide Ransheng went above and beyond to take us to watch the sunset. We had originally planned to visit Rose Valley, but because the area happened to be experiencing a holiday period and the surrounding traffic was congested, we spontaneously changed our plans to Red Valley instead. Red Valley also has spectacular viewpoints where the rock cliffs are bathed in the warm glow of the sunset, creating a gentle and serene atmosphere that gave us an even more authentic local experience. On the way back, our vehicle was unfortunately struck from behind by another car, which caused us to collide with the car in front of us, resulting in a three-car pileup. The vehicle that caused the accident shockingly fled the scene. Fortunately, our tour guide handled the situation alertly and gathered the necessary information, so we didn't lose too much time.

Today's journey, from the hot air balloon flight, to exploring the rock formations, to the sunset at Red Valley, was rich and unforgettable.
