[Greece Self-Guided Tour Day 4] Leisurely Exploring Athens City Center | Acropolis Classic Route, Constitution Square, and Olympic Stadium Ruins—All in One Go

Itinerary Overview After yesterday's long-distance excursion to the suburbs, today we shift the pace, strolling leisurely through the city of Athens. From Syntagma Square, the Temple of Zeus, and the site of the first modern Olympics, we make our way to the Acropolis and the old town of Plaka, taking in the modern vibrancy and cultural depth of this ancient historic city. 📍Today's route: Temple of Zeus → Panathenaic Stadium → Syntagma Square & Changing of the Guard → Athens Acropolis (entering via the South Gate) → Stroll through Plaka → Grocery shopping → Dinner back at the apartment Homemade breakfast and a relaxed departure This morning we made breakfast ourselves in the apartment, enjoying a Greek-style salad and bread, drizzled with poppy seed honey jam we bought as a local specialty in Turkey, paired with a vegetable and fruit salad and olive oil vinaigrette—refreshing and full of local flavor. After tidying up, we set off around 9:30 to begin today's exploration of the city.

▲ Homemade breakfast buffet: A simple meal bursting with Greek flavor Syntagma Square and the Three Great Buildings of Greece Our first stop was Syntagma Square in Athens. Along the way, we passed by Greece's three great classical buildings: the National Library, the University of Athens, and the Academy of Athens. All three are built in the ancient Greek architectural style, majestic and full of photographic value. Because we got held up taking photos, we missed the 10 a.m. changing of the guard ceremony, so we had to put off watching it for later.

Next, we arrive at the magnificent Temple of Olympian Zeus, which is one of the largest temples in ancient Greece. Although most areas are currently cordoned off for repairs, the towering columns still allow one to feel the grandeur of that great project. Admission is 20 euros per person, and we chose to walk around the outside of the wall to enjoy the view.

The next stop is the Panathenaic Stadium, the main venue of the first modern Olympic Games and the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. Once again, we chose to shoot from the outside, capturing the lines of the architecture and the silhouette of the stands.

Greek Guard Change at Constitution Square We returned to Constitution Square to watch the 11:30 guard-changing ceremony. Although it's small in scale, the handover is full of ritual — the guards' steps unfold slowly like a dance, with kicks, leg hooks, and ground stomps, each movement carrying great intensity. Worth mentioning especially is the Greek guards' distinctive uniform style: khaki long coats, white tights, and black tasseled shoes — quite different from the guard uniforms of other European countries, showing off a vivid national character.

Acropolis of Athens: The Grand Finale Historic Site Booking Acropolis tickets online can save you time waiting in line on-site, but be sure to select your "entry time slot" — if you arrive late, you won't be allowed in. On the recommendation of our tour guide Kaikai, we chose to enter through the "South Entrance," which gave us a more complete touring route and helped us avoid the crowds.

Sights along the way: The ruins of the ancient theatre (Theatre of Dionysus) Ancient colonnades and another large theatre (Odeon of Herodes Atticus) Ascend to the Propylaea (the Sacred Gate), flanked on the left and right by the Temple of Nike and the Monument of Agrippa On the right, the Temple of Artemis; and right in the center, the Parthenon Finally, walk to the end of the platform and take a photo with the fluttering Greek national flag The whole visit takes about two hours; we strongly recommend wearing non-slip shoes and bringing water and a sun hat.

▲ Looking down at Athens from the temple Plaka District & our first encounter with the "bracelet gang" After leaving the Acropolis, we walked through the Plaka district from the north exit. This area is full of unique little shops, cafés, and souvenir stalls. We saw many tourists sitting at outdoor seats, sipping coffee while gazing up at the Acropolis hill. Here we also ran into the online-famous "bracelet gang" — they forcibly tie a bracelet onto tourists' wrists and then demand payment. However, we noticed the Greek version seemed relatively mild; when one tourist refused to pay, the person quietly helped remove it without further fuss.

▲ Street View of Plaka District Evening Grocery Shopping and Apartment Time After today's itinerary ended, we headed to the supermarket to buy ingredients for dinner and meals for the next few days. Back at the apartment, cooking, eating, doing laundry, and tidying up gave this trip a bit more of a 'lived-in' feeling.
