[Turkey Free Travel Day 6] Sky Mirror and Whirling Dance First Experience: From Cappadocia to Konya

Trip Overview This morning, we made a special effort to wake up early and stand on the hotel rooftop to welcome the hot air balloon spectacle of Cappadocia. Yesterday we looked down at the magnificent landscape from a hot air balloon; today we switch perspectives, gazing up from the ground as hot air balloons slowly rise into the sky filled with them — one up, one down, one moving, one still, forming a kind of romantic contrast.

▲Early Morning Hot Air Balloon Scenery Today marks the beginning of the "one city per day" itinerary. We are leaving Cappadocia and heading to Konya (Konya), a historic city in Turkey and former capital of both the Sultanate of Rum and the Karaman Beylik. The full day of driving is approximately three hours, with three stops planned along the way featuring historical and natural attractions: Tuz Lake, Sultanhanı Caravanserai, and Çatalhöyük. In the afternoon, we will arrive in Konya city center and visit the Mevlana Museum as well as a rare Sufi whirling dervish performance. 📍Today's Route: Cappadocia → Lake Tuz → Sultanhani Caravanserai → Çatalhöyük → Konya City → Mevlana Museum → Sufi Whirling Dervishes Show → Konya Dinner and City Stroll Lake Tuz: The Sky Mirror on the Salt Lake Our first stop is Turkey's second largest lake — Lake Tuz (Tuz Gölü). On sunny days, when there's water and clouds, this salt lake can produce stunningly beautiful "sky mirror" photos.We were incredibly lucky today — the sky was clear, the lake was calm and mirror-like, and a few wisps of white clouds dotted the horizon. Absolutely perfect scenery! The guide had originally planned for us to stay only 30 minutes, but everyone got so absorbed in taking photos that we ended up staying a full hour. It's fine if it squeezes the rest of the itinerary — this view was totally worth it!

▲Walking and taking photos on the lake surface: thin layers of water reflect the blue sky and human silhouettes, as if immersed in a dream Sultanhanı Kervansarayı: A Trading Post on the Silk Road About an hour's drive after leaving Lake Tuz, we arrived at the Sultanhanı Kervansarayı (Sultanhanı Kervansarayı). This is a caravanserai built by the Sultanate of Rûm in the thirteenth century, serving as a rest stop between cities, where merchant caravans and military troops were provided with lodging and supplies at that time. This caravanserai is one of the best-preserved in all of Turkey. This time, we did not go inside for a tour, only admired the magnificent stone structure and arched architecture from the outside, which was also a quiet moment.

▲The Caravanserai's Exterior Gate and Stone Carvings: Witnessing the Magnificent Remains of the Silk Road's Transportation Lifeline Çatalhöyük: The Origin of Civilization 7,500 Years Ago Next, we arrive at Çatalhöyük, a settlement site inhabited by humans since 7500 BC, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will first visit the Çatalhöyük Museum, which introduces the obsidian tools, pottery, and animal bones excavated from the site.This shows that agriculture and animal husbandry techniques already existed at the time, and that religious rituals were already being carried out, worshipping the statue of the "fat goddess" representing fertility. Archaeologists believe that the inhabitants gradually migrated westward from eastern Turkey, and that this site was one of the meeting points of early civilizations. Outside the museum, we visited the site in person. The site is divided into three layers: the bottommost layer consists of Neolithic primitive human structures, the middle layer contains traces of Greek habitation, and the topmost layer is Roman remains. Since later constructions were cleared away, this actually allowed the oldest living traces to be fully preserved and presented.

▲Çatalhöyük Site: What you see in this layer are traces of Neolithic life Mevlana Museum: The birthplace of Rumi and the whirling dervish ritual By the time we rushed into Konya's city center it was almost 5 o'clock, so the guide hurried to arrange for us to head straight to the Mevlana Museum (Mevlana Müzesi), which closes at 6:30. Luckily the road was clear and we arrived right on time. This is the resting place of Rumi, the spiritual master of the Islamic Sufi order, who was also the founder of the whirling dervish ceremony. In the past, he established a school here to teach his followers, blending poetry, philosophy, and religious practice. The museum displays many of the school's facilities from that era as well as ancient mosque spaces, making it the best window into Sufi culture.

▲ Mosque next to the museum Sufi Whirling Dervish Performance: Feel the Rhythm of the Spirit After leaving the museum, we rushed to the Konya Culture Center to watch the Sufi whirling (Sema) ceremony performance. This was a public performance our guide helped us find, and it was free~ if it were a private performance it would be 25 euros per person! When we took our seats there were very few audience members, but the number gradually grew as showtime approached. The equipment and setting on site were both very professional, and the guide specifically reminded us: this is not an entertainment performance, but a religious ceremony — no clapping, no talking throughout. The whole performance was divided into four parts, with the dancers going from bowing, to circling, to spreading their arms and spinning, symbolizing the union of man and God. The instructor and the older members also joined in for the final spinning. After the dance ended, everyone left in silence, the atmosphere solemn and sacred — it was an unforgettable cultural experience.

▲Finally closing with a recitation of the Quran Dinner in Konya and a night tour of the city After the performance, we went to a restaurant recommended by our guide to enjoy local Konya cuisine. The specialties included meat pies and oven-roasted lamb, fragrant and hearty. After the meal, we took a walk along the nearby streets and found that most shops here close early, but we unexpectedly came across a wholesale shop, where our guide even personally haggled on our behalf — we bought some ornaments and traditional Konya sweets as souvenirs.

The Sky Mirror of Lake Tuz was dreamlike and enchanting, Çatalhöyük filled us with awe for prehistoric civilization, and the Whirling Dervishes let us feel the spiritual beauty of Islamic Sufism.
