[Turkey Free Travel Day6] Sky Mirror and First Experience of the Whirling Dervishes: From Cappadocia to Konya

Itinerary Overview This morning, we made a special effort to wake up early and stand on the hotel rooftop to greet the spectacular hot air balloons of Cappadocia. Yesterday we admired the magnificent landscape from above aboard a hot air balloon, but today we're shifting perspective — standing on the ground and gazing up as countless hot air balloons slowly rise into the sky. One from above, one from below; one in motion, one in stillness — it's a kind of romantic contrast all its own.

We leave Cappadocia and head to Konya, a historic Turkish city that was once the capital of the Sultanate of Rum and the Karamanid Beylik. The full day's driving time is about three hours, with three stops along the way featuring historical and natural highlights: Lake Tuz, the Sultanhanı Caravanserai, and the Çatalhöyük mound. In the afternoon, we arrive smoothly in Konya city and visit the Mevlana Museum, along with a rare Sufi whirling dervish performance. 📍Today's route: Cappadocia → Lake Tuz → Sultanhanı Caravanserai → Çatalhöyük → Konya City → Mevlana Museum → Sufi Whirling Dervish Show → Dinner and Evening Stroll in Konya Lake Tuz: The Sky Mirror on the Salt Lake Our first stop is Turkey's second-largest lake — Lake Tuz (Tuz Gölü). On sunny days, when there's water on the surface and clouds in the sky, this salt lake can produce stunningly beautiful "sky mirror" reflections.Today we were incredibly fortunate! The weather was crystal clear and sunny, the lake surface glistened beautifully, and the sky was adorned with delicate white clouds. The scenery was absolutely perfect! Our tour guide had originally planned to stay for only 30 minutes, but we all got so absorbed in photography that we ended up staying for a full hour. Compressing the rest of our itinerary was no problem at all—this landscape was absolutely worth it!

This is a caravanserai built in the 13th century by the Sultanate of Rum, serving as a relay rest stop between cities, providing lodging and supplies for merchant caravans and armies at the time. This caravanserai is one of the best-preserved in all of Turkey. This time we didn't go inside to visit, but only admired the magnificent stone masonry and arched design from the outside — a quiet moment as well.

We will first visit the Çatalhöyük Museum, which introduces the obsidian tools, pottery, and animal bones excavated from the site.From this, we can see that at that time people already possessed agricultural and pastoral techniques, and had engaged in sacrificial activities, worshipping "fertility goddess" statues that symbolized reproductive power. Archaeologists believe that residents gradually migrated westward from eastern Turkey, and this place is one of the meeting points of early civilizations. We visited the archaeological site in person outside the museum. The site is divided into three layers: the bottom layer contains primitive human architecture from the Neolithic period, the middle layer contains traces of Greek habitation, and the top layer consists of Roman structures. Since later buildings had been demolished, the oldest living remains were able to be presented completely and intact.

▲Çatalhöyük Site: What we see in this layer now are traces of Neolithic life. Mevlana Museum: The birthplace of Rumi and the Sufi whirling dervish dance. By the time we rushed into Konya city it was almost 5 o'clock, so our guide quickly arranged for us to head straight to the Mevlana Müzesi, which closes at 6:30. Luckily the road was clear and we arrived right on time. This is the eternal resting place of Rumi, the spiritual master of the Islamic Sufi order and also the founder of the whirling dervish ritual. In the past, he established a school here to teach his followers, blending poetry, philosophy, and religious practice. The museum displays many of the school's original facilities and ancient mosque spaces from that era, making it the best window into understanding Sufi culture.

Mosque Next to the Museum Sufi Whirling Dervish Performance: Feel the Spiritual Rhythm After leaving the museum, we hurried to the Konya Culture Center to watch the Sufi whirling dervish (Sema) ceremony performance. This was a public show that our guide helped us find, and it was free—if it were a private performance, it would be 25 euros per person! When we took our seats, there were only a few audience members, but as the performance drew near, the crowd gradually increased. The venue and equipment were very professional, and our guide gave us a special reminder: this is not entertainment, but a religious ceremony, so we should not clap or make noise throughout. The entire performance was divided into four sections. The dancers started with bows and walking in circles, then opened their arms and spun, symbolizing the unity of humans and God. The spiritual master and senior members also joined in the final spinning. After the dance ended, everyone left in silence with a solemn and sacred atmosphere—it was an unforgettable cultural experience.

Ending with Quranic Recitation Dinner in Konya and Evening City Stroll After the performance, we headed to a restaurant recommended by our tour guide to savor authentic Konya cuisine. The specialty dishes featured beef patties and oven-roasted lamb—aromatic and satisfyingly hearty. After dinner, we wandered the nearby streets and discovered that most shops close early here, but we unexpectedly stumbled upon a wholesale store. Our tour guide even personally helped us negotiate a better price, and we purchased some decorative items and traditional Konya sweets as souvenirs.

The mirror-like sky of Lake Tuz was like a dream, Çatalhöyük filled us with awe for prehistoric civilization, and the whirling dervishes let us feel the spiritual beauty of Islamic Sufism.
