[Turkey Independent Travel Day 8] Local markets, Lake Salda, and the golden-hued Pamukkale: a deep-dive day trip into the local area

Today's original plan was to visit the Rose City of Isparta in the morning and Pamukkale in the afternoon, but due to unusual weather that severely damaged the roses with hail, our guide made a last-minute change and took us deep into his hometown to experience the most authentic Turkish life. From visiting a local relative's home and shopping at the market, to visiting Turkey's deepest lake, Salda Lake, and the Pamukkale hot springs at sunset, it was a rich and heartwarming day full of warmth. 📍Today's route: Antalya → Yeşilova Town → Local Market Experience → Lake Salda → Pamukkale Hierapolis Ruins & Hot Springs → Celebration Dinner → Turkish Bath Experience Authentic Turkish Local Life Experience: Visiting a Relative's Home and Small-Town Market Charm Our first stop was the home of our guide Ran's relatives, where we experienced local hospitality customs firsthand: first washing our hands with a citrus-scented cleanser, followed by candies and Turkish red tea. The guide and his relatives hadn't seen each other in years, making the reunion especially heartwarming.

▲ A group photo with Ran Sheng and his relatives After leaving, we headed to the small town market. The guide told us the market only runs one day a week, and today happened to be that day. The market is divided by section — the front area sells clothing, while the back area is for fresh fruits, vegetables, and dried goods. Strawberries were just NT$80 per kilogram, and cherries only NT$120, with generous samples to try! The top choice among dried fruits was figs, available in both refrigerated and fresh versions, priced at NT$240 and NT$400 per kilogram respectively. Group members each grabbed a bag to take home.

Although poppies are toxic, the government allows their cultivation, and the medicinal parts are purchased by official authorities, while the rest is made into jam for consumption.

▲Poppy seed jam: goes wonderfully with honey! Salda Lake: the quiet beauty of a receding lake After noon, we headed to Salda Lake, the deepest lake in Turkey. According to our guide, because of years of water shortage, the lake's surface has shrunk by more than 200 meters compared to when he was a child. Although the weather wasn't perfect and only a hint of turquoise blue appeared along the shore, the lake and the surrounding mountain scenery were still breathtaking.

▲On the other side of the lake, we finally saw the colors from the photos the guide had shown us, though only in part. Visiting the guide's hometown: a first taste of Turkish old-fashioned soda and local-style mahjong After leaving Lake Salda, the guide had originally planned to bring us to his home as guests, but since his mother hadn't been feeling well the day before and had gone into town, we instead gathered for a while in the courtyard of his old family home. He let us try a local soda, which had a taste reminiscent of Taiwan's old-fashioned soft drinks, and he also taught us the local version of mahjong — it was really fun!

▲Turkish mahjong is very similar to German mahjong, but the rules are different Pamukkale Hierapolis Ruins and Sunset Hot Spring Experience The tour guide said most tour groups only stay in Pamukkale for about 1.5 hours, but we specifically requested to stay until sunset, so we ended up staying for about 3 hours in total. We entered from the south gate and first visited the Greco-Roman ruins area, including the Hierapolis Theatre, the Gate of Hell (Plutonium), and the Temple of Apollo. Most of the structures have been damaged by earthquakes, which made me reflect that historic sites can never be restored once lost — if you want to see them, you'd better do it soon.

▲Denizli Chicken We set aside 90 minutes to fully experience the natural limestone hot springs of the world heritage site Pamukkale. Based on advice we found online, we wore socks while getting into the water to avoid stinging feet and to prevent slipping. As we went deeper into the terraced springs, the crowds gradually thinned out, and we managed to capture footage of the stunning scenery all to ourselves. The sunset dyed the blue-white limestone in golden-red hues — an absolutely breathtaking scene from this trip.

▲ As the sun sets, the pure white Cotton Castle glows in golden light The last dinner with our guide and an unexpected Turkish bath Tonight is the last night led by our guide, Ran, so we invited him and the driver to dinner to thank them and to raise a toast to our smooth journey. After dinner we checked into the Pamukkale hotel, and our group members decided on the spot to book a 90-minute Turkish bath ($75). Only when I went along with them did I discover that the facility wasn't inside the hotel itself, but at a spa center attached to a five-star hotel.It turns out the package includes 30 minutes of sauna and pool time, and only the following 60 minutes is the authentic Turkish bath and massage. The pool isn't very big, but the sauna room is spacious. The only slight regret is the lack of a water basin, so we couldn't experience the traditional fun of pouring water to raise the heat. Still, the group felt this massage experience was better than the one at the hotel in Cappadocia.

▲Pamukkale Hot Springs Night View Trip Summary and Reflections Although the plans had to be changed suddenly due to the weather, we unexpectedly experienced the most authentic Turkish hospitality and everyday life. The hot spring scenery under the Pamukkale sunset is truly unforgettable. Thank you to our guide Ran Sheng for accompanying us these past few days.
