[Turkey Independent Travel Day 9] Marmaris Vacation Day: Mediterranean Vibes and Harbor Exploration

Itinerary Overview Today is our last day in Turkey. We'll set off from Pamukkale and head to Marmaris, a resort city on the Mediterranean coast. This is a favorite summer getaway for European travelers, lined with yachts and beach bars that reveal a completely different side of Turkey. After formally bidding farewell to our guide, Ran, in the morning, we began a leisurely exploration of this coastal city, while also making our final preparations for tomorrow's trip to Greece. 📍Today's Itinerary: Depart from Pamukkale → Marmaris → Beach walk and castle photoshoots → Dock exploration → Evening drinks at a music bar A Warm Farewell, Heading to a Mediterranean Holiday Town This morning, Ran Sheng and our driver came to pick us up. Ran Sheng thoughtfully prepared a small gift as a farewell memento, filling us with warmth and affection. After arriving at the bus station, we officially bid farewell to Ran Sheng. These five days passed in a flash, and we felt reluctant to part. Next, our private car driver will continue taking us to Marmaris, a journey of about three hours. We'll arrive at our hotel around noon.The hotel had already gotten three rooms ready ahead of time, so we went ahead and dropped off our luggage first, then set out on an afternoon walk to explore.

▲Take a photo with the driver upon arriving in Marmaris Strolling through downtown Marmaris: the flavor of beach and harbor It takes about 30 minutes to walk from the hotel to Marmaris Castle, so we simply took a leisurely stroll along the beach instead, letting the sea breeze wash over us as we watched European tourists sunbathing all along the sand, feeling a vacation vibe completely different from what we'd experienced before. This place is a world apart from the inland Turkish towns we'd visited in the previous days — it's a seaside paradise built entirely for tourists. The harbor is filled with uniquely designed yachts, many offering full-day island tour packages. The narrow alleys near the castle are peaceful and quiet, creating a striking contrast with the lively seaside and making you feel like you're in a charming Mediterranean town. 🎫 Marmaris Castle entrance tickets are approximately 6 euros. We decided not to enter, just took photos and enjoyed the exterior views.

▲ The market beside the Castle District, Marmaris Grand Bazaar Scouting the Pier: Confirming Tomorrow's Boat Departure and Getting Lost Since I was taking a boat to Greece the next day, I decided to go to the pier myself to confirm exactly where to board. I used the booking app to look up the meeting point, but Google Maps kept sending me in the wrong direction, so in the end I had no choice but to ask the travel agency for help. Following the travel agency's directions, I took a taxi to the correct location. The driver quoted a rather high price, but to save my energy I had no choice but to grit my teeth and accept it (I was charged 800 lira for the one-way trip, while the very next day the same route only cost 250 lira...). After arriving at the pier, I had to pass through an entrance with a passport checkpoint, behind which was the ferry company's ticket booth. Only after confirming the boarding information with the staff on site did I finally feel the weight lift off my chest.

In the evening, I headed out along the seaside to experience another side of Marmaris: with music and lights intertwining, every bar was putting on its own live performance to draw in customers. In the end, I chose a bar featuring a three-woman performance group — a lead singer, a violinist, and a DJ — and paired it with a bottle of local EFES beer, spending my last night in Turkey just like that.

▲Live Performance Bar Marmaris Souvenir Recommendations 📦 Although Marmaris itself is mainly a vacation destination, you can still find quite a few local souvenirs here that are well worth taking home: Raki: A traditional Turkish spirit with a distinctive anise aroma. The most famous brand is TEKIRDAĞ — it's recommended to buy a small bottle first to try it out.

Olive Oil Soap: Commonly found in markets and supermarkets, the local brand DALAN offers excellent quality with vintage-style packaging, making it a wonderful choice for gifts.

Turkish Delight (Lokum): Not only sold at the bazaars, you can also find it at major supermarkets throughout Marmaris — we recommend picking up the pistachio or rose flavors. Marmaris Accommodation and Restaurant Recommendations 🏨 Restaurant Recommendations: If you're planning to stay one night in Marmaris, we recommend choosing accommodation that's within walking distance of the sea and close to the city center and harbor, so you can easily enjoy the nighttime atmosphere and catch the ferry to Rhodes the next day. Recommended accommodation: House Of Marmaris Affordable prices, complete facilities It's about a 15-minute walk to the beach, with convenience stores and several restaurants nearby. We arrived early at noon that day, and three rooms were already available for early check-in. If your budget allows, you might also consider a sea-view hotel near the harbor, such as the Yacht Marina Hotel, which is closer to the ferry boarding point. 🍽 Restaurant recommendations: There are many restaurants along the seaside area of downtown Marmaris, with seafood dishes, mixed grill platters, and local beer being especially recommended: Taj Mahal: Indian cuisine, very authentic and delicious. Yunus Cafe Bar: Located right by the beach, it has an amazing atmosphere at sunset and specializes in Mediterranean cuisine. Drink recommendation: The local EFES beer—cold and smooth, paired with the sea breeze, feels totally like vacation! 🚢 Ferry information from Marmaris, Turkey to Rhodes, Greece If your itinerary includes "crossing the sea from Turkey to Greece," Marmaris is one of the most popular ferry ports. Here's a handy summary of practical ferry information: 📍 Boarding location: The departure point for the boat is Marmaris Cruise Port. After passing through the security checkpoint, you'll find the shipping company's ticket counter. Please remember to bring your passport, as identity verification will be conducted on site. Google Maps location may sometimes be inaccurate, so we recommend visiting the boarding area a day in advance to confirm the exact location (we've personally been misled by the navigation before). 🕒 Boarding time and recommendations: The boat departs daily at approximately 9:15 AM, with a voyage time of about 1 hour. We recommend arriving at the pier at least one hour before departure to complete check-in and ticketing procedures.
