🚗 Independent travel: Should you rent a car to drive yourself or go with a shared ride?

The great thing about traveling independently is that you can be in control of almost everything: your itinerary, destinations, meal times, and especially your mode of transportation.

However, this is also the part that most people find hardest to decide. Should you rent a self-drive car to have control over your schedule, or opt for a shared ride to save on costs and avoid the hassle of driving?

If you are traveling with family or a group of friends, renting a self-drive car is quite a comfortable choice. You can decide your own departure time, stop wherever you want, and visit a roadside eatery or a hidden gem without having to follow the driver's schedule.

Especially if your itinerary includes many sightseeing spots or travel between different areas, a self-drive car will provide a greater sense of autonomy and privacy.

However, you should also account for additional costs such as car rental, fuel, tolls, and parking fees. Most importantly, the driver must be familiar with the route and ensure safety throughout the trip.

If traveling alone or in a small group, ride-sharing can be a more economical option. You don't have to drive yourself, nor do you need to worry about finding directions or parking; simply book your seat and hop on at the scheduled time.

This is also a suitable choice for trips along fairly common routes, especially when you only need to travel from point A to point B without the need to make many stops.

The downside is that the schedule will be less flexible. You may need to wait for enough passengers, pickup and drop-off times might change, and you won't have full control over the stops during the trip.

If you're traveling in a group of 3–5 people, want to explore many places, and prefer flexibility in your itinerary, renting a self-drive car is often a more worthwhile option.

If you are traveling alone or with 1–2 people, looking to save money and avoid driving yourself, a shared ride will be more convenient.

Additionally, you don't necessarily have to choose a single option for the entire trip. You can absolutely combine various types of transportation: carpooling for long distances, renting a motorbike or taking a taxi while in the city, and renting a self-drive car for those days when you want to travel further and explore more destinations.
