Da Nang
Nam Ô Fish Salad – A Sinh
Translated from Vietnamese
Fish salad (gỏi cá) can be found in many different places, but only the fishing village of Nam Ô catches the delicious, sweet fish needed to create this Da Nang specialty that tourists love so much. For the dry version of fish salad, herring is lightly "cooked" with lime juice, then pressed dry and mixed with spices and toasted rice powder. For the wet version, the fish is not mixed with rice powder but instead combined with a spicy broth. The dish is enjoyed with rice paper and various vegetables such as lettuce, bean sprouts, banana blossom, and ming aralia leaves, along with thinly sliced fruits like wild banana, green mango, and star fruit.
