Tien Sa Lighthouse in Da Nang – An ancient lighthouse amid the green forest of Son Tra. Discover a lighthouse more than 100 years old

Translated from Vietnamese

Not only does Da Nang have beautiful beaches and famous bridges, it is also home to structures nestled in the middle of nature that not every traveler includes in their itinerary. Tien Sa Lighthouse is one such destination, located on the Son Tra Peninsula, surrounded by green forest and overlooking the vast open sea.

Tien Sa Lighthouse in Da Nang – An ancient lighthouse amid the green forest of Son Tra. Discover a lighthouse more than 100 years old

The lighthouse was built in 1902 and bears the hallmarks of French architecture, with its tower standing out against the green of the mountains and forests. From the surrounding area, visitors can take in views of the sea, the bay, and part of the landscape of the Son Tra Peninsula.

Unlike attractions packed with entertainment services, Tien Sa Lighthouse captivates visitors with the journey to get there, its natural scenery, and the feeling of exploring a maritime structure that is still in active operation.

Admire the sea view and explore ancient architecture

The appeal of Tien Sa Lighthouse lies not only in the tower itself but also in the natural scenery surrounding it. Lush green forests, winding mountainside roads, and sweeping views out to the sea create an experience quite different from the city center.

Upon arrival, you can take time to observe the lighthouse's exterior architecture, take photos in permitted areas, and enjoy the scenery from safe vantage points. If the weather is favorable, the blue of the sea and the green of the forest create a beautiful backdrop for your travel photos.

The lighthouse is still a working facility that serves maritime operations, so visitors are not always allowed to go inside or climb the tower. Please follow the instructions of the management staff and do not enter areas marked with restriction signs on your own.

Tien Sa Lighthouse is located on the Son Tra Peninsula, about 18–23 km from central Da Nang, depending on your starting point and route.

From Da Nang city center: You can follow Vo Nguyen Giap Street along the coast, then continue onto Hoang Sa Street to reach the Son Tra Peninsula. From the Linh Ung Pagoda area, continue along the permitted route and follow the signs to Tien Sa Lighthouse. Please enter the location name on Google Maps and check the route before you go, as the access road for the final stretch may change according to management regulations.

Choose a vehicle:

Motorbike: Only ride yourself if you have experience on steep roads and have checked the regulations on which vehicles are permitted on the Son Tra route. Don't assume that every type of motorbike is allowed to go all the way to the lighthouse.

Car or taxi: This may be more convenient for families and groups of friends, but you should confirm access to the area at the end of the route with the driver or the management unit.

Join a tour: Suitable if you are not yet familiar with the roads on Son Tra or want to combine several sightseeing spots without having to drive yourself on mountain pass roads.

The road near the lighthouse can be narrow, steep, and full of sharp bends. If you're not familiar with the route, you shouldn't insist on driving up yourself at all costs. Please check your brakes and tires, bring drinking water, and never stop your vehicle at a blind spot to take photos.

When is the best time to go?

Mornings or early afternoons with dry weather are usually ideal for exploring the Son Tra Peninsula. Clear skies give you a better view of the sea, and getting around on the steep roads is also easier than when it rains.

You should set aside about 1–2 hours for getting there and exploring the lighthouse area, not including time for stopping by other spots on the peninsula. If you plan to go sightseeing in the late afternoon, check the traffic restriction hours and the actual travel time to get there so you don't have to head back after dark.

Suggestions for combining nearby places

If you want to make the most of your trip to Son Tra, you can arrange your itinerary based on the route and actual access conditions:

- Linh Ung Pagoda Bai But: A great stop for exploring spiritual architecture and admiring the sea from above.

- Son Tra Banyan Tree: A destination for nature lovers, standing out with its massive root system and lush green forest surroundings.

- Viewing Pavilion: You may consider this option if the route to this spot is open and accessible.

You should check the routes before putting together your itinerary, and avoid trying to enter areas that are restricted or closed.
