It turned out to be a house that actually owns a vast, sprawling dragon fruit field. It belongs to Twin, our Vietnamese staff member. We were warmly invited in — "come in, come in!" — and had lunch together. Her father toasted with beer again and again — cheers, cheers! The dining table was piled high with food: steamed chicken, and pig's ear (mimigā), dipped just a little into a sweet-and-spicy sauce.

Consistently delicious! Day after day, they had been eating lots of rice, so they must have been tired. Rice porridge with chopped greens. Beans were cooked in together, giving it a gentle sweetness.

There was also banh chung made from steamed glutinous rice, but I didn't even reach for it — instead I kept getting refill after refill of this porridge.

There was also something like braised pork — bamboo shoots and chunks of pork simmered in a sweet-and-savory sauce. The flavor had soaked in so incredibly deeply — a real taste of home.
