Carefully selected! Hue souvenirs (Ho-hitsu)

It's fun to choose souvenirs that bring back memories of the places I've traveled to. I love little knick-knacks and accessories, and a folk craft item I found near the Hue Imperial Palace really caught my eye!

Paper craft dolls. A turtle, a dove, a child, a court noble maybe? The colors are so vivid and each one has a different expression — the handmade clumsiness is just so cute. Oh, I want one, which should I pick~... while I was hesitating over that, my husband Sei gave me a puzzled look and said, "Do you really need it? You already have so many..." He didn't seem convinced. Maybe he doesn't like the fluorescent-ish colors? Or maybe it's the overwhelming "tacky souvenir" vibe he dislikes? True, it might look out of place among my little display items. But just two or so would be fine... Still, feeling a bit guilty that my room isn't tidy, I reluctantly gave up and walked away. But now I kind of regret it. I should have just bought them.... I haven't seen these fiddly little dolls anywhere else, not at the airport, not at any other gift shop. Well, I did take a photo, so I'll just consider it displayed on my cloud shelf. The favorite item we actually bought was an essential oil spray. There were many options like lemongrass, mint, and rosemary, but we both chose the lotus scent, which we liked. Its gentle sweetness will surely bring a sense of relaxation to any room. We joined this shopping tour without any prior knowledge, but it seems that essential oil making is quite popular in Hue.

Near the hotel, there were lots of homemade aromatic oils for sale. At first I wondered, is this alcohol? Or is it gasoline? There were so many similar shops that I couldn't tell whether it was a local specialty or an everyday necessity for the locals, but when I asked a Vietnamese acquaintance, it turned out to be essential oil, and the mystery was solved.

A machine like this? It looked handmade, so I couldn't quite believe it was an actual product... but there they were, lined up on the shelf.

Hue is rich in nature, so maybe that's why natural-derived oil making has been thriving here?
