Go to Son Tra early — a few tips for those unfamiliar with the route
The Son Tra Peninsula is right next to the city center — riding a motorbike from downtown to the foot of the pass takes only about 15–20 minutes. It's so close that many locals treat Son Tra as a place to go for a morning run and still make it back in time for work.
But you should go early. In the afternoon, the sloping road catches the full sun, and the asphalt surface reflects the heat back up so harshly it stings. Early morning is the opposite: the road is quiet, the air is cool, and the higher you climb, the more pleasant it feels — the difference from down in the city is clearly felt on your skin.
Almost everyone stops at Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda. The 67-meter-tall statue of Avalokiteshvara (Guan Yin) faces out to sea, and standing at its base looking up is quite awe-inspiring — inside the statue there are also several floors of worship halls.

Going early means you still get the temple courtyard empty and quiet. By around 7–8 AM, visitors start pouring in and tour buses begin arriving; before that, mostly all you hear is the sound of bamboo brooms sweeping leaves and the waves echoing up from below.
A few practical notes for those unfamiliar with the roads:
• Clothing: this is a temple, so shoulders and knees should be covered — some guests have been reminded about this right at the gate. • Vehicles: the road is steep with many sharp curves. Underpowered scooters or ones with worn brakes really shouldn't be used. When going downhill, absolutely do not turn off the engine and coast. • Monkeys: they're real and very used to people. Don't hold food carelessly, and don't feed them. • Gasoline: fill up all the way down in town, there is no gas station on the peninsula.

At the foot of the peninsula there are a few small beaches, almost empty in the early morning. On the way down there are also bends in the road that look straight out over the bay, where you can see the whole city sitting on the other side of the water — there's no sign marking it, but it's the stretch most worth pulling over onto the shoulder and stopping for a while.
The whole round trip fits within about three hours. For people living in Da Nang, this is a trip you can take on any weekend morning without much preparation at all.
