Exchanging Money / ATM / Payment in Da Nang: Tips to Avoid Fees

Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the only officially accepted currency. USD is accepted only at a few 5-star hotels. Exchange rate: 1 USD ~ 25,000 VND (2026). Where to exchange:
1. Gold shops — best rate (0.5-1% margin). Common on Tran Hung Dao and Hung Vuong streets. No fees charged, hand over USD/EUR/KRW and receive VND right away. Bring your passport to get a receipt. 2. Banks — the safest option, but rates are 1-1.5% lower. Vietcombank, BIDV, and Techcombank have foreign currency exchange counters. Open 8:00-16:30, Mon-Fri.
ATM: use your Visa/Master card to withdraw VND. Vietnamese banks like Vietinbank, BIDV, and Agribank charge low fees (~50,000đ/transaction), with a withdrawal limit of 3-5 million/transaction. Avoid tourist ATMs with unfamiliar logos (Global ATM) — the fee is 100,000-200,000 VND per withdrawal. For payments: cash is king at small eateries. Momo and ZaloPay are the 2 popular apps; VNPay is accepted at supermarkets. Apple Pay/Google Pay are not yet widely used.
