Nam O fishing village at dawn: fishermen returning from the sea, the fish market at the silted riverbank

Thuyền thúng tròn trên bãi cát ven biển — cảnh làng chài miền Trung

Nam O is a 700-year-old fishing village located in Lien Chieu District, 15 km northwest of the center of Da Nang. It is famous for two specialties: traditional Nam O fish sauce and herring salad. The best way to experience it: come at 5-6 AM when fishermen return from their night fishing trips at sea.

Scene: dozens of round basket boats pull ashore, fishermen carry baskets of fresh fish onto the sand, and fishmonger women are already standing by waiting. The fish market happens right there on the beach — no stalls, no price tags. Mackerel, round scad, anchovies, squid, crab — so fresh some are still moving. Wholesale prices are 40-50% cheaper than the supermarket.

From Da Nang: a 30-minute motorbike or Grab ride away. There are no tours that take you here — you have to go on your own. Bring a camera, and if the morning is cold, bring a light jacket. After 8:00 am the boats finish docking and the village becomes quiet again. Includes a Nam O fish noodle soup breakfast at Mrs. Nghia's shop just across the way.
