Marble Mountains: climbing the caves, going down to Non Nuoc street to carve statues

Marble Mountains — the "five mountains of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth" — is a cluster of striking limestone peaks rising amid the coastal plains, about 8 km from the center of Da Nang. The largest peak, Thuy Son, is the one visited by most tourists. You can take an elevator to the top (30,000 VND) or climb 156 stone steps on foot.

Inside Thủy Sơn are dozens of large and small caves, each one enshrining a statue of Buddha or a Bodhisattva. Huyền Không Cave is the widest, featuring a "sky well" — sunlight shining straight down from the summit to the cave floor, creating a sacred feeling. Âm Phủ Cave is dark and damp, so bring a flashlight.

At the foot of the mountain lies the Non Nuoc stone handicraft village — hundreds of workshops carving marble statues. This is where large Buddha statues for pagodas all across Vietnam are sculpted. You can't buy the large statues (too hard to carry), but you can pick up bracelets, prayer beads, or small feng shui stones for 50,000–500,000 VND.
