Hai Van Pass: 21 km of winding road, the most beautiful sea view in Vietnam

Translated from Vietnamese
Đèo Hải Vân — đường cong queo qua núi xanh, view mở

Hai Van Pass is a natural boundary between Da Nang and Hue, stretching 21 km with a peak elevation of 496 meters. Top Gear chose it as one of the most beautiful coastal routes in the world. From the pass, you can see Lang Co Bay on one side and Da Nang Sea on the other.

Today there's the 6.28 km Hai Van tunnel that helps cars and trucks travel quickly in just 15 minutes. But riding through the old pass is still a classic motorcycle touring experience — taking 45-60 minutes by motorbike, stopping to take photos at the pass summit (Hai Van Quan), and enjoying the views of both bays at once.

From Da Nang: Follow National Road 1A heading north, pass through Lien Chieu → to the base of the pass. Travel between 6:00-9:00 AM to avoid fog and intense sun. Rent a motorcycle of 150cc or higher (the pass has steep terrain). Do not travel in rainy weather — the road becomes slippery and dangerous.
