Highlights of Southern Tibet: Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, and Pelkor Chode Monastery — a breathtaking one-day journey linking lakes, glaciers, and ancient temples

This morning at 8 o'clock, we officially departed Lhasa to begin the most spectacular one-day journey of the southern route. Along the way, the Tibetan scenery becomes more and more open the higher you climb, so that even before arriving, you already feel refreshed and carefree.

Yamdrok Tso is one of the three sacred lakes of Tibet. According to Tibetan legend, it is a fairy's jewelry box that was overturned and fell to the human world, transforming into the turquoise lake we see today. ▸ The Viewing Platform Offers the Best Views The first stop is the viewing platform, from which you can directly overlook the entire lake. When the weather is pleasant, the lake water displays multiple shades of blue, making it absolutely perfect for photography.

On the other side of the lake are layer upon layer of mountain peaks, and the contrast between the lake's shimmering waters and the mountain scenery is truly spectacular.

▸ Close Encounter with the Lakeshore Continue driving for about another 20 minutes and you'll reach the lake viewpoint, where you can walk down to the lakeside to take photos. You'll often see yaks and Tibetan mastiffs here, with locals charging visitors a fee to take photos with them (we didn't see any Tibetan mastiffs that day). The scenery by the lake is the perfect combination of "yaks + snow mountains + lake.

Many seabirds are also often seen on the lake, and it looks especially beautiful when they're seen flying over the lake's surface.

On our friend's suggestion, we also went to the lakeside to scoop up some fine sand. But I have to say: neither photos nor videos can really capture the beauty that was in front of my eyes.

The tour guide specially gave us 45 minutes of free time for photos, which was quite generous. Lunch in Langkazi — a simple but pretty good set meal We had lunch in Langkazi County at noon. The guide had already warned us in advance that some meals over these days would be set meals shared family-style, and we were all fine with that. This meal had a good variety of vegetable dishes and they tasted pretty good too — at 50 yuan per person, it was really good value for money.

Karo Glacier — A Witness to Glacier Retreat After leaving Yamdrok Lake, we headed to Karo Glacier, which stands at an altitude exceeding 5,000 meters. Tour guide Yong mentioned that when he led groups here ten years ago, the glacier was much larger than it is now, and it has clearly shrunk. Standing there in person, one couldn't help but feel a sense of heaviness. ▸ The Viewpoint Where Most Tourists Stay Most tourists typically take photos near the entrance and stay for about 1 hour.

▸ Our Challenge: Reaching the 5,200m Viewpoint Since we'd already come this far, we decided to bring oxygen tanks and climb up to the nearby high point. Although it was only a 200-meter difference in elevation, at 5,000m the physical sensation felt completely different. I breathed in oxygen the whole way as I walked, watching the parking lot grow smaller and smaller while the mountain scenery became more and more magnificent, and finally, after 30 minutes, I successfully reached the 5,200m summit.

The most surprising thing was: my mom actually climbed up too! Although she didn't make it all the way to the very top, that's already amazing.

⚠️ Suggestion: If you also want to go up to the viewing platform, start climbing as soon as you get off the bus — otherwise, like us, you'll end up rushing at the end. Palcho Monastery (visit at your own pace) — an ancient temple where three major sects coexist. The journey through Tibet is never boring — magnificent scenery greets you outside the window at every moment.

After a 3.5-hour drive, we arrived at our last stop—the Pelkhor Chöde Monastery. The entrance fee was 60 yuan, and while our guide said it was optional, how could we pass it up after coming all this way?

What makes Palcho Monastery special is that it is a monastery where the Sakya, Shalu, and Gelug schools coexist together. The main buildings include: The Tsochin Grand Hall (the Great Hero's Hall) The Auspicious Multi-Gate Stupa (the Stupa of a Hundred Thousand Buddhas) The Sun-Drying Buddha Terrace And the rare monastery city walls, which were built back then to defend against British forces

▸ Guardian Deity Temple First, let's visit the Guardian Deity Temple. As soon as you step inside, you'll smell a strong scent of alcohol — in Tibetan Buddhism, wine is offered to the guardian deities.

▸ Main Hall (Mahavira Hall) The murals on the walls have been blackened by smoke, because after the British army occupied the site, it was used as a kitchen back then. Although there are traces of damage, you can still make out traces of the murals from the past. Inside the hall you can see: An 8-foot-tall statue of Shakyamuni Buddha The side halls enshrine Vairocana Buddha and Maitreya Buddha Many silk-woven thangkas hang from the ceiling Photography is forbidden inside the temple, which actually makes it easier to focus on listening to the guide's explanation.

▸ Blessing at the Auspicious Multi-Gate Pagoda (Hundred Thousand Buddhas Pagoda) After leaving Tsomen Hall, we came to the pagoda, and after climbing up to the second level, we walked a full circle around it, praying for peace and safety.

Originally planned for 40 minutes, but because the tour guide's explanation was so engaging, we spent over an hour exploring before we left. On the bus, Yongge specially played a movie about the British military invasion of Tibet, which made the entire visit feel much more historically meaningful. Arrived at Shigatse: tomorrow we take on the Mount Everest Base Camp challenge! We arrived at Shigatse at 8 PM. Because we're heading to Mount Everest Base Camp (5200m) tomorrow, our guide recommended we prepare two types of oxygen bottles: • Large bottle (700 RMB): Can be used for 14 hours Small bottle (400 RMB): provides about 4 hours of oxygen. He said from experience, one large and one small bottle works best — the large bottle for use in the car and at accommodations, and the small bottle for outdoor activities. Everyone dutifully bought accordingly, since spending a bit of money is a small matter, but it would be a shame if altitude sickness ended up affecting the trip. Tonight's Accommodation & Getting Ready for Tomorrow's Everest Trip The hotel we're staying at tonight is very high-tech — when you enter the room, the curtains and lights turn on automatically, and even the toilet has automatic sensors. We had dinner at the dumpling restaurant next door, and while we were at it, we bought instant noodles to eat tomorrow at Everest Base Camp.

Today's Summary: Holy Lake × Glacier × Ancient Temple - Composing the Most Classic Southern Tibet Route Today's itinerary had long travel times, but the scenery was incredibly rich and layered. The serenity of Yamdrok Lake, the stunning Karo Glacier, the historical depth of Pelkhor Monastery— Three completely different landscapes woven together in a single day, creating the most complete Tibetan impression. Tomorrow is what I've been anticipating most on this trip: Everest Base Camp— The day when I truly begin to challenge high altitude.
