[Lhasa, Tibet] The Road Back to the City from Back Tibet: Tibetan Medicine Culture Experience × Princess Wencheng Live Theater

Today's schedule was relatively relaxed. The visit to Tashilhunpo Monastery, originally planned for this morning, had already been completed yesterday, so today we simply followed the Southern Friendship Highway all the way back to Lhasa. Along the way we experienced daily life of the Tibetan people, a guided tour of Tibetan medicine culture, and a stroll through Drepung Monastery, plus tonight's most anticipated show — the large-scale outdoor live theater performance "Princess Wencheng." On our sixth day in Tibet, we're gradually getting used to the air here, and finding opportunities to blend into local life. 🗓 Today's Itinerary Leisurely breakfast in Lhaze → Rinbung Service Area (encountering everyday Tibetan life) → Lunch in Qushui → Guided Tour of the Tibetan Medicine Culture Center → A Walk Outside Drepung Monastery → The Grand Outdoor Theater Show "Princess Wencheng" Breakfast and Morning Light: The Most Relaxing Morning in Ü-Tsang Today the guide arranged a 9:10 departure, so we could finally sleep in a little and properly enjoy the hotel breakfast we missed the day before. The hotel has a wonderful view — at 8:30 the sunlight peeks out from the edge of the city, lighting up the dry, cold, distinctly Ü-Tsang blue sky. This kind of unhurried morning is a rare, leisurely moment on a Tibet trip.

Renshi Service Area: Immersed in the Daily Life of Tibetans After about a 1.5-hour drive, we arrived at Renshi Service Area. The surrounding mountain scenery was as magnificent as ever, but the biggest surprise came from something else— A whole group of Tibetans resting on the ground. Led by the Hong Kong girl traveling with us, we joined right in, and they even warmly shared with us: Tsampa (a Tibetan staple food) Dried yak/mutton jerky Qingke barley wine Tsampa has a fragrant, grain-like aroma, while the barley wine is somewhere between vinegar and a light alcohol—slightly sour, refreshing, and a bit fizzy. It was just a brief exchange, but it felt like truly stepping into the everyday life of Tibetans.

Lunch at Quxi: Mom's Sunflower Seeds Shopping Adventure We arrived at Quxi at 12:30 noon for lunch. After finishing our meal, Mom seized the moment and rushed over to the supermarket next door, where she picked up some 'sunflower seeds' to bring back to Taiwan as a souvenir. During any trip, there are always these little delightful surprises that pop up unexpectedly. Tibetan Medicine Culture Center: Sky Burial Implements, Medical Thangkas and 'Free' Consultation We returned to the area near Lhasa around 3 PM. Just as our travel companion Ajuan had mentioned—we were arranged to visit the Tibetan Medicine Culture Center. Actually, I could already vaguely sense it yesterday at Tashilhunpo Monastery and this morning from the way the tour guide was building up to it. That said, overall there was no forced purchasing, so it can also be considered another form of cultural exploration. 📌 Tour Highlights (photography strictly prohibited inside) 1. Display of Sky Burial Instruments As the guide explained: Because of the sky burial custom, Tibetans "grasped the concept of human surgical anatomy very early on," and recorded it using medical thangka paintings. 2. Tibetan Medicine Thangkas and Knowledge of Medicinal Herbs Students of Tibetan medicine learn about herbs from a young age, and must memorize over 900 kinds of Tibetan medicines before they can graduate. (Indeed, doctors from all countries are the smartest group of people.) 3. Complimentary Consultation Section The doctor assessed our health status by examining our tongue coating and palm. Although the explanation was quite professional, we felt it wasn't nearly as accurate as what our tour guide had described. The recommended treatment required continuous use for three months, with a cost of 6000 RMB. Therefore, our entire group politely declined. We left around 4 o'clock and returned to the hotel to rest.

A Walk Outside Drepung Monastery: The Regret of Just Missing It Again After checking in, we had some free time, so we decided to take a walk in front of Drepung Monastery. Drepung Monastery is one of the three great monasteries of Lhasa, but its opening hours are a bit special: 9:00–17:30, though apart from the Main Assembly Hall, all the other halls close after 15:30. Every time we come here, we're just one step too late — and today was no exception. Just as we arrived at the monastery gate, the main hall had just closed. Since we couldn't get into the monastery, we wandered around the vendor stalls outside instead: all kinds of textiles, Buddhist items, and ornaments, brimming with Tibetan flavor.

Tibetan Dinner: Sweet Tea, Cold Noodles, and a Tipsy Uncle's Warm Welcome For dinner, we picked a cozy little Tibetan restaurant, with warm yellow lighting and only a few seats, but it felt just like home. A slightly drunk uncle kept chatting with us, saying "anyone who's traveled far is a friend," so warmly and endearingly enthusiastic. We ordered: Tibetan sweet tea (milk tea flavor, 3 RMB a cup) Cold noodles Hot and sour noodles Some other Tibetan snacks The bill for four of us came to just 43 RMB — cheap and so satisfying.

Princess Wencheng Live Performance: A Stunning Show Worth the Ticket Price We self-funded our attendance at tonight's 《Princess Wencheng》 large-scale live performance: Performance ticket: 300 RMB Transportation: 40 RMB Performance start time: 20:30 Arrived near the venue at 20:00, with many cultural and creative shops around, and could also see the Potala Palace in the distance.

Numerous performers, animals, authentic stage sets, and impressive set effects demonstrate meticulous attention to detail throughout. At the end, staff distribute tsampa (roasted barley flour) to the audience to sprinkle on the dancers, symbolizing blessings.

At 22:15, after the performance ended, we browsed through the cultural creative shop, then took the shuttle bus back to the hotel. Tomorrow is our final itinerary—Namtso Sacred Lake. A brief recap: from the grandeur of nature, we return to Tibet's everyday rhythm. Today lacked the breathtaking scenery like Mount Everest, yet it made this Tibetan journey feel more complete. Real encounters with Tibetan people, deeper knowledge of Tibetan medicine and culture, exploring flavors in Lhasa's alleyways, enjoying the epic performance of Princess Wencheng in the evening. The peak of beautiful scenery was in the previous days, while these two days added the warmth of "life and culture." Because of this, our sleep and rhythm have gradually adapted to the high-altitude environment. Tomorrow, we will head to Namtso Sacred Lake to write the purest, most serene final chapter of this journey.
