[Indonesia Self-Guided Travel] Jakarta 4-Day 3-Night Itinerary Recommendation | Mosques, Cathedrals, Shopping, Cuisine, and Nightlife—All Satisfied in One Trip

Preface The two trips to Jakarta in 2024 and 2025 were both part-business, part-leisure in nature. As the Indonesian government plans to relocate the capital to Nusantara, the new capital on Borneo, the old capital Jakarta—due to problems such as land subsidence, traffic congestion, and overpopulation—may gradually fade out of the administrative core in the future. Nevertheless, this city's unique cityscape, where prosperity and tradition intertwine, still fills people with curiosity and the joy of exploration. Entry Procedures Indonesia offers two entry methods: an E-visa and a visa on arrival. It's recommended to apply for the E-visa online in advance, which not only saves time but also helps you avoid the long queues at the airport. The modernization of the entry process is truly impressive — you can pass through immigration simply by scanning your passport. After collecting your luggage, just scan the QR code to complete the customs declaration, then show the completed page to customs. The overall clearance process is fast, and the progress in tourism infrastructure is remarkable and impressive.

Accommodation Introduction First trip stay: DoubleTree by Hilton Jakarta A high-quality hotel belonging to the Hilton Group, three nights with breakfast included cost about NT$7,800 in total, making it extremely cost-effective. The breakfast is diverse and includes authentic Indonesian dishes, almost eliminating the need to look for lunch elsewhere. The rooms are clean and the service is attentive, suitable for both business and independent travelers alike—a five-star recommendation!

Second trip stay: Grand Mercure Jakarta Kemayoran Three nights with breakfast for about NT$7,000, the room was comfortable, and the overall quality was pretty good. However, the breakfast was relatively ordinary, so my overall rating is four stars, recommended.

Transportation Traffic congestion in Jakarta is the norm, and traffic jams are common even during off-peak hours. It is recommended that travelers download the Grab App in advance, as it makes booking a ride convenient and transparent, with reasonable prices. If the attraction isn't far away, walking is also a way to experience the city's pulse. Recommended Jakarta Tourist Attractions National Monument of Indonesia (Monumen Nasional, Monas) The National Monument of Indonesia (Monumen Nasional, often called Monas) is one of Jakarta's most iconic landmarks, symbolizing the unwavering determination of the Indonesian people in their fight for independence. Standing 137 meters tall, this monument is located in Merdeka Square in the heart of the city. Its peak is adorned with a gold-plated flame sculpture weighing 14 tons, symbolizing a national spirit that will never be extinguished.

The History Museum (Museum Sejarah Nasional) inside the tower displays a large number of documents and models covering Indonesia's history from the colonial period to the independence movement, including Dutch rule, the Japanese occupation era, and the historic moment when President Sukarno read out the Declaration of Independence.

Take the elevator up to the observation deck at the top of the tower to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Jakarta cityscape. On clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the distant Sumatra island and coastline. However, due to security measures and large crowds, the waiting time is quite long. Personally, I think the view is ordinary and wouldn't particularly recommend visiting.

Jakarta Cathedral Built during the Dutch colonial period in a Neo-Gothic architectural style, it is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jakarta. The building is elegant and solemn, with its interior preserving wooden ceilings and stained glass windows, showcasing the beauty of religious art. Standing directly across the street from the Istiqlal Mosque, it symbolizes religious harmony.

Istiqlal Mosque (Masjid Istiqlal) The largest mosque in Indonesia and the most magnificent in scale in Southeast Asia, able to hold more than 120,000 worshippers. The mosque's name "Istiqlal" means "independence," commemorating Indonesia's liberation from colonial rule. Designed by the Christian architect Frederich Silaban, it embodies the idea of harmonious coexistence among different religions. The building blends modern and Islamic elements, with its white marble facade, large dome (symbolizing Indonesia's independence in 1945), and a minaret soaring to 96.6 meters, presenting a truly magnificent sight.

The interior's soaring, beam-free design is truly stunning, and the light pouring in feels especially solemn and sacred. The mosque has a free tour center offering English explanations and a service to borrow sarongs and headscarves, allowing non-Muslim visitors to enter the main prayer space in a culturally respectful way.

Taman Fatahillah Square and the Old Town Once the administrative center during the rule of the Dutch East India Company, this area still preserves many colonial-style buildings, including the Jakarta History Museum and the Wayang Museum (Shadow Puppet Museum). Around the square there are also many nostalgic cafés and creative little shops, perfect for strolling and taking photos.

Plaza Indonesia Shopping Mall One of the most upscale department stores in Jakarta, bringing together international luxury brands, designer fashion, and spacious interiors. The mall offers a wide variety of dining options, from high-end Western restaurants to Asian cuisine, making it the top choice for shopping and quality dining. Mall of Indonesia (MOI) A large shopping mall that mainly serves the local community, featuring numerous affordable brands, restaurants, and a cinema — a great place to experience local middle-class consumer culture. Food street around the mosque Around the Istiqlal Mosque, many local food stalls and casual eateries are gathered together. We recommend trying traditional favorites like Sate, Nasi Lemak (coconut milk rice), and fried chicken rice — affordable, delicious, and the most authentic taste of Jakarta.
