[Indonesia Independent Travel] Jakarta 4-Day 3-Night Itinerary Recommendation | Mosques, Cathedral, Shopping, Food, and Nightlife All in One

Preface Both my trips to Jakarta in 2024 and 2025 were a mix of business and leisure. As the Indonesian government plans to relocate its capital to Nusantara, the new capital on Borneo, the old capital Jakarta—burdened by land subsidence, traffic congestion, and overpopulation—may gradually fade from its role as the administrative core in the future. Even so, this city's unique blend of bustling modernity and traditional charm still fills visitors with curiosity and the joy of exploration. Entry Procedures Indonesia offers two entry methods: an E-visa and a visa on arrival. We recommend applying for the E-visa online in advance — it not only saves time but also helps you avoid the crowds queuing at the airport.

Accommodation Introduction First trip stay: DoubleTree by Hilton Jakarta A high-quality hotel belonging to the Hilton Group, three nights including breakfast for a total of about NT$7,800, extremely good value. The breakfast is varied and includes authentic Indonesian dishes, so you almost don't need to look for lunch elsewhere. The rooms are clean and the service is attentive, making it suitable for both business and independent travelers — a five-star recommendation.

Second trip, stayed at Grand Mercure Jakarta Kemayoran. Three nights with breakfast cost about NT$7,000, the room was comfortable, and the overall quality was good. However, the breakfast was relatively ordinary, so overall I'd give it four stars and recommend it.

Transportation Traffic congestion in Jakarta is the norm — even during off-peak hours, jams are common. Travelers are advised to download the Grab App in advance, making it convenient and transparent to book a ride at reasonable prices. If the attractions are not far apart, walking is also a great way to experience the city's rhythm. Recommended Jakarta Tourist Attractions National Monument of Indonesia (Monumen Nasional, Monas) Monumen Nasional (Monas) is one of Jakarta's most iconic landmarks, symbolizing the Indonesian people's unwavering resolve in their struggle for independence. This 137-meter-tall monument stands in Merdeka Square at the heart of the city, its summit crowned with a gold-plated flame sculpture weighing 14 tons, representing a national spirit that will never be extinguished.

The National History Museum (Museum Sejarah Nasional) inside the tower displays a large collection of documents and models covering Indonesia's history from the colonial era to the independence movement, including Dutch rule, the Japanese occupation, and the historic moment when President Sukarno read the Proclamation of Independence.

Take the elevator up to the tower's observation deck, where you can overlook the entire Jakarta cityscape, and on clear days you can even see the distant coastline of Sumatra Island. However, due to security controls and heavy crowds, the wait time is quite long. Personally, I found the view fairly average and wouldn't especially recommend visiting.

Jakarta Cathedral Built during the Dutch colonial era in Neo-Gothic style, this is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jakarta. The elegant and solemn building preserves its original wooden ceiling and stained-glass windows inside, showcasing the beauty of religious art. Standing opposite the Istiqlal Mosque across the street, it symbolizes religious harmony.

Istiqlal Mosque (Masjid Istiqlal) The largest mosque in Indonesia and the grandest in Southeast Asia, capable of holding more than 120,000 worshippers. The name "Istiqlal" means "independence," commemorating Indonesia's liberation from colonial rule. Designed by Christian architect Frederich Silaban, it embodies the ideal of harmonious coexistence among different religions. The building blends modern and Islamic elements — a white marble facade, a great dome (symbolizing Indonesia's independence in 1945), and a soaring 96.6-meter minaret, all combining to create a truly majestic presence.

The soaring interior design without beams is truly stunning, and the light pouring down makes the space feel especially solemn and sacred. The mosque has a free guided tour center that offers English explanations and rents out sarongs and headscarves, allowing non-Muslim travelers to respectfully enter the main prayer hall as well.

Taman Fatahillah Square and Old Town

Plaza Indonesia Shopping Mall One of Jakarta's top department stores, gathering international luxury brands and fashionable designs in a spacious setting. The mall offers a wide range of dining options, from high-end Western restaurants to Asian cuisine, making it a top choice for shopping and quality dining. Mall of Indonesia (MOI) A large shopping mall mainly serving the local community, featuring numerous affordable brands, restaurants, and a cinema — a great place to experience local middle-class consumer culture. Food street around the mosque Around the exterior of Istiqlal Mosque, many local food stalls and casual eateries have gathered — I recommend trying traditional dishes like Sate, Nasi Lemak (coconut rice), and fried chicken rice. They're affordable, delicious, and offer the most authentic taste of Jakarta.

NOYA Pub & The H Club Beyond culture and cuisine, Jakarta's nightlife is not to be underestimated either. NOYA Pub and The H Club are the local representatives of upscale nightclubs, featuring modern decor and a lively atmosphere on-site, perfect for a nighttime drink or some social relaxation.
