Cheongju Airport, operated by the Korea Airports Corporation, announced on the 22nd that it will move forward with facility improvements, including expanding its domestic terminal, in order to proactively respond to growing air travel demand. Cheongju Airport plans to expand its domestic terminal by 4,770 square meters at a total project cost of about 28 billion won. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of this year and be completed by the end of 2027. The scale of the international terminal expansion project will be finalized this year through a preliminary feasibility study. The airport is also pushing forward with a new parking building project to resolve its chronic parking shortage. The 1,000-space parking building will be built with an investment of about 49 billion won, covering a total floor area of 34,000 square meters across three above-ground floors. Construction is set to begin in the first half of next year and be completed by the end of 2028. Seong Seung-myeon, director of Cheongju Airport, said, "We are also in discussions with North Chungcheong Province and other bodies to improve public transportation infrastructure, including establishing new bus routes to Cheongju Airport." He added, "It will take time, but through infrastructure expansion, we will grow into the representative international airport of the central region." Last year, Cheongju Airport recorded 4.67 million passengers. Following 2024's figure of 4,579,221, this marks the second consecutive year surpassing 4 million passengers, and the highest number of passengers since the airport opened in 1997. The diversification of international routes appears to have played a major role in breaking the record. Last year, Cheongju Airport operated a cumulative total of 36 routes to 10 countries, with a total of 1,942,061 passengers using these routes.
