Da Nang travel review ✈️ Visiting the Hue Imperial City

The Imperial City of Hue is the palace site of the Nguyen Dynasty, the last dynasty to have Hue as its capital, and it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a well-maintained palace complex. Its size is roughly similar to that of Gyeongbokgung Palace, and it served as the imperial palace of the Nguyen Dynasty for about 150 years, from 1802 to 1945. You enter the main gate of the palace through Ngo Mon Gate, located on the south side. Once you pass through Ngo Mon Gate, you'll come to Thai Hoa Palace, the main hall of the imperial palace, which you can think of as the central hall. It is the place where 13 emperors held their coronation ceremonies.

The interior of the royal palace was built modeled after China's Forbidden City, so I heard this place is also called the Forbidden City.

We pass by the shrine (Thái Miếu) that honors the founders of the Nguyen Dynasty, then pass by Thế Miếu, and move on into the inner court, within the Purple Forbidden City.

We moved to the Kien Trung Palace, located in the very back of the Imperial Citadel. It's a residential palace that Emperor Khai Dinh built by blending in European style. Both the exterior and interior are decorated with gorgeous tiles. In particular, the exterior decorations were made by attaching broken pieces of tile one by one to form various elaborate patterns that are symmetrical left and right. Since this palace is so full of things to see, I found myself wanting to come back again with more time to spare.
