Precious Heritage – Exploring the 54 Colors of Vietnamese Culture in Hội An

There's a place in Hoi An that you might step into just out of curiosity about the photos, but when you leave, you'll find you've learned so much more about Vietnam.

Precious Heritage Museum by Réhahn is located on Phan Boi Chau Street, in an old French house in Hoi An. This is a project by French photographer Réhahn, who has spent nearly a decade traveling to various regions to document the life, portraits, and culture of Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups.

What makes the museum special isn't just the beautiful photographs. Alongside the portraits are the stories of the people in the pictures, along with the costumes, handicrafts, and cultural artifacts collected during Réhahn's project.

A space of over 500 m² consisting of four rooms, displaying hundreds of portraits and over 60 sets of traditional costumes. Some areas also feature films and documents that help viewers understand more about the journey behind those photographs.

What I find interesting for international guests is that Hoi An here is just the starting point. Instead of just learning about an ancient city, you can spend about an hour to discover a very different Vietnam: communities living in the northern mountainous regions, traditional weaving and embroidery techniques, traditional costumes that fewer and fewer people know how to make anymore.

The museum offers free admission and is open from about 08:00 to 20:00. According to recent reviews from 2026, many visitors spend anywhere from 45 minutes to over an hour exploring the place; some families also enjoy the UV-light symbol-hunting activity designed for children.

This is also a type of place that's very easy to fit into a day in Hoi An. After walking through the old quarter, instead of continuing to look for a café to rest, you could walk toward Phan Boi Chau and spend some quiet time discovering the stories behind Vietnam's ethnic groups.
