Quảng Nam likes to quarrel" — a jesting phrase but not quite a joke
People from Central Vietnam have a familiar saying: "Quang Nam loves to argue." It sounds like criticism at first, but it's usually the people of Quang Nam themselves who repeat that saying the most, and they tell it with quite a bit of relish.

The word "cãi" here doesn't mean to quarrel. It's closer to this meaning: not easily nodding in agreement. When you hear something, you ask back to get to the reason, even when the person speaking is someone senior to you. Anyone who's worked with people from Quang has probably met this type of person who speaks their mind directly, sometimes so much so that people from other places find it uncomfortable — but when you think about it, you realize they never talk behind your back.
That quality left quite a clear mark in the history of this region.
In the 1898 examination session, Quảng Nam had five men pass the doctoral-level imperial examination together in the same term. It was such a rare event that King Thành Thái bestowed four words upon them, "Ngũ phụng tề phi" — five phoenixes soaring together. For a region that is not naturally wealthy, with barren soil or prone to flooding, success is not a matter of luck—it's the result of placing extreme value on education.
At the beginning of the 20th century, in this very place, there emerged a group of intellectuals who chose a path distinctly different from their times: Phan Châu Trinh, Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, Trần Quý Cáp. They advocated opening schools, teaching the national script, teaching trades, and changing people's way of life first — rather than relying on an uprising. It was a hard and slow choice, and all three of them paid the price for it.

The link between "argumentative" and those names above isn't just a fanciful assumption. Someone who's used to pushing back against arguments is also someone who has a hard time accepting that things simply have to be a certain way just because.
Today, Quang Nam and Da Nang are two separate administrative units — Da Nang separated and became an independent city under central government authority starting in 1997. But the people on both sides still recognize each other as people of Quang, still speak the same dialect that people from elsewhere have to strain their ears to understand.
If you come here and a stranger tells you flat out to your face that you're wrong, don't rush to feel offended. Chances are that's their way of showing you respect: enough respect not to lie just to keep things pleasant.
