Heritage Connection Train" Da Nang - Hue: Is It Worth Going? (Experience + Tips)

The tourist train "Connecting Central Vietnam's Heritage" runs from Da Nang to Hue, operated by Vietnam Railways. I've gathered information from the official website ketnoidisan.dsvn.vn and various reviews for you to consider before booking tickets.

WHERE DOES IT PASS THROUGH The journey takes about 3 hours, crossing Hai Van Pass — the railway route considered the most beautiful in Vietnam — then following along Lang Co Bay. The train stops at Lang Co station for about 10 minutes, just enough time to get off and take photos.

SCHEDULE There are 4 trips numbered HD1, HD2, HD3, HD4 — meaning 2 pairs of trains per day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, running in both directions between Da Nang and Hue. HIGHLIGHTS Soft seats, air conditioning, large windows with direct views of mountains and sea. There is a community car serving Huế specialties (bánh lọc, bánh nậm, bánh ít...) and Huế singing performances. Staff wear áo dài, are friendly, and often point out beautiful photo spots. The car is clean and has wifi.

CONS — GOOD TO KNOW IN ADVANCE Only seats available, no sleeper beds. Food and drinks are charged separately, not included in the ticket price. The stop at Lang Co is only 10 minutes, quite rushed. And most importantly: from October to February, central Vietnam gets heavy rain and poor visibility, so if you travel in this exact season you'll pretty much miss out entirely on the beautiful scenery — and the scenery is the whole reason people get on this train in the first place.

TIP The best time to go is from around March to September. Book 7–10 days in advance, as tickets sell out quickly on weekends and holidays, especially for the community carriages. Board early to get a seat by the window.
