A few practical notes. The Old Quarter bans vehicles during the ceremony hours, so park outside the perimeter and walk in — don't try to drive in. If you want a riverside seat, you need to arrive early, around before six o'clock. You can buy flower lanterns right at the wharves along the Hoai River, and remember that once released, a paper lantern is still just trash if no one collects it — release just one or two for the experience, don't dump a whole basketful.

What about Mid-Autumn Festival in Da Nang, then? It's completely different, and this is where a lot of people are surprised.

Da Nang doesn't have an old quarter, so Mid-Autumn Festival here isn't about tourism — it's a festival for children and neighbors. Star-shaped lanterns covered with shiny cellophane paper, lion dance drums beating from the mouth of the alley, small lion dance troupes going from house to house, and the grown-ups setting out trays of offerings in the shared courtyard. If you want to see that, don't go downtown — go into the residential neighborhoods, and go after seven in the evening.

These past few days in the city, moon cake stalls have already started appearing along the sidewalks, and shops have been decorating with lanterns since early on.
