Entering the rainy season: why you should never sit waiting for it to clear up in Da Nang

Mid-September marks the start of the rainy season in Da Nang. It doesn't rain continuously right away, but the afternoon showers have already gotten heavier, and the wind has changed direction.

There's something I should mention upfront, because it ruins the schedule of many people: the rain here is nothing like the rain in Saigon.

Saigon rain is convective showers — comes down fiercely for about 30 to 45 minutes then clears, and the sky brightens again. The locals there are accustomed to darting into a coffee shop to sit and wait, and once the rain ends they move on, hardly losing any time at all.

The rain in Central Vietnam this season is a persistent drizzle caused by the northeast monsoon wind. The wind carries moisture in from the sea, and when it hits the mountain range blocking its path, it pours down, and it can pour continuously for two or three days without stopping. Sitting around waiting for it to clear up can cost you a whole afternoon, and sometimes it can cost you the whole trip.

So the approach must be completely different: don't wait for the rain to stop, rearrange things to do during the rain instead. Whoever understands this point can still go out and have fun normally during the rainy season. Whoever doesn't understand will just sit in the hotel for four days and then go home.

The actual rainy season schedule here: starts around September, extends to December, but most concentrated in October and November. That's also precisely when typhoons and tropical depressions are most frequent. September like now is just the edge of the season — there is rain, but it's not the most intense yet.

Hoi An in particular needs one more layer of understanding. The old town sits in a low-lying area at the downstream end of the Thu Bon River, so when there's heavy rain upstream in Quang Nam, the water rushes down and the town floods. This happens almost every year in October and November, differing only in severity.

And don't romanticize it. The photo of boat rowing in the middle of the ancient town looks very beautiful, but at the end of October last year, the water level of the Thu Bon River measured at Cau Lau station exceeded the 1964 record by about 0.12 meters — old houses were soaked in water for many days, and shops suffered real damage. For people living there, that is not a travel experience.

Now to the part that few people mention: the rainy season is also when Central Vietnam is most beautiful throughout the year.

Humid and gradually cooling weather is the condition that creates the sea of clouds on the mountain. In the early mornings at Ba Na, clouds condense densely throughout the valley into a white plane, leaving only a few mountain peaks protruding above. In the dry and sunny season, this scenery barely exists.

The tradeoff is risk: when the clouds are too thick, you reach that place and see only white, unable to see clearly even a few meters away. No one can predict this, and that's something you have to accept when climbing the mountain this season.

Then came the sunny days interspersed between the two spells of rain. The rain washes the dust from the air, so right after it clears completely, the sky is so clear that from Son Tra you can see every building across the bay clearly. This is the time of the farthest visibility of the year, and it only lasts two or three days.

The vegetation is also entering its most verdant period. At My Son, Cham bricks absorb water and deepen in color, with moss and ferns clinging densely to the tower bases, and the entire valley damp and quiet. This temple complex suits overcast skies better than harsh sunlight — sunlight makes it look parched and barren, while rain makes it look its true age.

And Hoi An's ancient town at night, right after the rain has just stopped, is the best time to go for a walk. The stone-paved streets are still wet, and the lanterns cast pools of color onto the pavement. This season there are far fewer visitors than in summer, so walking through the town feels easy and relaxed rather than crowded.

A few practical things to keep in mind.

Leave the motorbike behind. A raincoat can only protect you from a brief rain shower; it won't save you from hours of pouring rain. Some roads are locally flooded, visibility is poor, and on certain mountain passes like Sơn Trà or Hải Vân, the road surface is slippery and rockfalls are common. This season, riding with a driver or a shared car is both cheaper than hospital fees and lets you get there right on schedule.

Watch storm updates, don't just check the weather app. The app only shows a rain cloud icon, the same one for both an ordinary downpour and an incoming tropical depression. Those two things are completely different in terms of impact.

If the sea is rough, don't count on going to the island. The boat to Cù Lao Chàm stops running when waves get large, and that decision is made on the day rather than announced weeks in advance. Don't make it the main point of your trip in October and November.

Prepare a list in advance. The Cham Sculpture Museum right in the center is the best shelter from rain in the city — the largest Cham sculpture collection in the entire country, and even a thorough visit takes an hour or two. Besides that there are coffee roasting cafes, cooking classes, and massage.

As for food, this season is actually a delicious season. The weather is naturally cold and damp, which pairs well with hot soups — mì Quảng, bún bò, bún cá, cháo. This is also what the locals here really eat on rainy days, not a dish put on just for guests.

Finally: room prices this season are much cheaper than the summer peak, and everywhere is empty. If you go to see and eat rather than to swim at the beach, then in October and November you gain more than you lose.
